Made my own ASP

I made an ASP for a dollar and thought some of you might like the idea.

I went to the local golf resort and asked for a few broken golf clubs. They had a trash can full and I got 4 of them that had good rubber grips and weren't damaged within 2 feet of the grip. They had mostly just had the heads broken off.

I cut them down to 24-26" length.

For the grip, I installed a CHEAP foam rubber grip for a bicycle that came 2 for a dollar. It feels GREAT in the hand and fits well.

At the tip I screwed in an inch long lag screw with a hex head. It fit snug already but I slathered the threads in a glue called "E-6000" Any glue that can fill gaps and is flexible should do fine (ie don't use super glue).

This thing is a demon. It sliced cardboard like it was butter and can splinter a 1x4.

I plan to carry it on walks.

Not bad for a dollar :)

I say, I say I thought you Texicanos were not allowed, I say, prohibited from carrying "clubs" (evil law, if I wanted to rid Tejas of CHLs this is how I'd do it)?

You are correct sir. I can carry a Desert Eagle 50AE and an ar-15 but a stick is out of the question here. They are all "assault sticks." :)

But no one gets in trouble as long as you don't carry in your car and as long as you are some punk kid that looks like he's wanting to smack someone and as long as you don't carry an obvious weapon like an axe handle, bat, slapjack, etc...

But yes, golf is technically illegal in Texas, as is baseball, tennis, and polo.

It sounds like you built yourself a nice little whipper, but it doesnt really qualify as an ASP, because it isnt collapsible. Sorry, Just my opinion.

What you have made is an impact weapon.

It will go to intent if you ever use it against another person.

It's one thing to buy and carry something illegal like an asp [ though I'm not advocating that either ], but to fabricate a weapon will bode worse for you with a jury.

Congratulations

Since you would be in violation of Tejas law with your club and expose yourself to greater criminal and civil liability, why not just carry a pistol?

It's a homemade club, and it will get you in bad ju-ju w/ any LEO that finds it in your possession outside of your home.

Now, a baseball bat & glove in the back seat (esp. this time of year) will get you nary a look.

Here's the statutes on that...

Texas Penal Statutes (http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/pe/pe0004600.html#pe002.46.02)

It ain't worth it...

Yep, you guys are right about "intent." Thanks for ruining my fun! :)

Here's a pic although you can't see the bolt in the end too well. It's actually got a really nice feel to it.

I always thought "The Club" steering wheel lock, or its clones, would make an impressive weapon if required and would NEVER be out-of-place if carried in an automobile.

The "Club" is a crappy weapon. Hold one and you'll see. It feels awful. The end is too skinny and light and it's too heavy overall and the little thing that spins and swivels feels weird too. (whoa major run on sentence! LOL)
But you are right, there's several off-brands of the club that would be very effective.
My parents have one that looks like an actuall bat of some kind that rocks.

brownie,

I'm assuming that you statement that an Asp was an illegal weapon was meant to be restricted to your or Bonker's jurisdiction. An asp, or any collapsible baton, may not be illegal to own or carry in other jurisditctions (it's certainly legal in Tennesse providing you've received the required training).

Training for a stick? You're serious? May be a very good idea, but there's a Land of Orange law mandating stick training?

"Alright , I say, class, y'all listen up here now. There's a test on this. This here's the grabbin' end and this here's the whacking end. Now, let's put on our orange gear and sign 'Rocky Top.'":D

Here in Arizona, it is legal to carry batons, ASPs, and other impact weapons with no training at all. Which is the way it should be. You only need a CCW if you plan to carry it concealed in the vehicle or on your person. The thought that an impact weapon is somehow deadlier than a firearm is somewhat ridiculous. An impact weapon would give an option to stop an attacker outside of using a firearm which is certainly deadly force.

hso: Thats correct, in my state you need to be certed in asp to carry one.

Most states are that way now I believe.

As others have posted some states allow it if you have a ccw as well.

Either way, most states restrict them one way or the other.

In Arizona, you only need the CCW if you're carrying it concealed. Same with a sword in the car or a fixed blade knife of any size. You only need the CCW if it is concealed. Same with a loaded firearm. As long as it is not concealed, you don't need a CCW. The mall knife shop here sells batons and ASPs. You can buy it and walk right out with it. Now, nunchaku are prohibited by federal law because they looked so fearsome in the movies, they had to ban them.

The fine folks here have a point about a home made club being a bad thing to a jury. It just goes to show that you haven't finished your new toy to make it jury accectable.

Put a large flyswatter head on that thing and some lettering that proclames it is a TEXAS flyswatter.

If you have anything to do with livestock then go to a Tack store and check out their riding crops. Add a couple pieces of leather to the end of that thing and you now have an industrial strength bull popper.

You don't really have a large ASP - some sort of dangerous beating stick, you just need to finish making your new jury acceptable "thing". Think creativly and you can probably invent a new Texas sized something. Just remember the lettering that labels it for the jury.

The training requirement in Tennessee is to be sure you know that you're not supposed to kill the person, but how to use the baton to whack them in less than lethal ways. Considering that a steel baton "up side da haid" could result in permanent damage or death I think getting training is as important as for any other weapon.

hso, but that's a statute? Have a cite by chance? I know, I know, I can look it up.

ASP Training is actually really important. One thing about batons is that if you hit someone in the wrong place, it may do nothing but really make them angry, and of course the other wrong places and you kill them.

All LEO in Georgia are required to take a class and become certified in ASP Baton use prior to carrying an ASP on their belt.

Same goes for OC chemical sprays for LEO in Georgia.

Bonker,

Get a walking cane for carrying on your walks. It would be almost as good for bonking as well.

I live in Texas and wish I could legally carry an ASP or a koppo stick. Oh well at least I can carry my pistol!

Bonker

Yeah I want to get a good cane. I can carry on planes too :)

But the drug stors here only sell flimsy aluminum canes. I need a heavy wood one.

My all-time-favorite beat-em-up-stick is the classic Japanese hardwood bokken, basically a properly balanced wooden sword.

The ASP or similar is great if you have the arm strength, but for smaller/female folks, I have concerns about it's stopping power against a larger type who's "charging". And given the widespread use of police batons, hardcore felons KNOW that the counter to the baton is to charge in and grapple.

Rather than re-hash my arguments, by comments on the bokken are in this thread:

Using an Asp or ay other baton, collapsable or not, can be considered deadly force if the wrong body part is struck, Head blows, neck strikes, Kidney blows, jabs to the solar plexus, liver orheart area can be lethal.Thats why LEOs are given extensive training in their use. That being said, using it improperly beats having it or something else used on you.

Here in Fl. if you have a CCP you can carry an Asp concealed just as with a firearm.

Yup, these ARE legally lethal-force.

That said, with a bokken, my first strike will always be low-line to the knee level from a high defensive stance. It slows 'em down and gives 'em something to think about :). If it's a home defense situation where some idiot has come in without a gun, I consider that a very safe and effective "first response" tool and technique.

Let's take one example: the Louisiana case where an older couple were confronted by the drunk Japanese kid. The wife was in total panic mode, freaked her husband out, he responded too quickly with a 44Mag.

I'd rather have a gun on me if it's needed, but nail the back of the idiot's calf and just crumple him with one whack of a bokken. If I'm up against a drunk or crazy or similar, fine, I'd rather do that first than shoot him.

If I've got some guy acting completely loony and trying to get into my home, then YES I'm in fear of losing my life or suffering great bodily injury and yes, I think "legal deadly force" can be justified. The shooter in the drunk Japanese kid case did get off. But I'll betcha he still feels like crap. In the same situation, if he's laying there with a broken leg but lives, I can live with *that*.

Jim, I must say I am surprised! I do not know the drunken Japanese story but if a kid stumbles in my house falling down drunk than I guess I can see just breaking his leg, but as a "first respnse" tool I am not skilled enough to take a chance...I catch anyone in my house my first response tool will be suficient for any response. ;)
