I just found a used Ruger Mk1 at the local gunshop for $150 ,it is in very good shape but seem like the previous owner parkerized it because it has a dull black finish. I know that Ruger did not make Mk1 anymore but I would like to know what is the difference between the MK1 and Mk2 ? can I use Mk2 magazine on the MK1? Why Ruger decide to make Mk2 ? Is there something wrong with the MK1 ?

The Mk 2 has a bolt hold-open on the last shot, and no, the mags aren't interchangeable :( ; they're still lots of fun, though.

Thank you very much for the information and I will visit the site and find out about the Mk1 and Mk2 , Too bad that the mag are not interchangeable because I have 4 magazines for the mk2.

Your MK 2 mags will work just fine in a MK 1. Mine do as I have both models of the gun.

Ooops, sorry; I'ved tried Mk1 mags in my Mk2, and they didn't work; one-way interchangeability?

I have a MK-1, and have bought a couple of after market mags made for the MK-2 that work fine. There are some frame variations between the older MK-1's (1950's & 60's) and the newer MK-1's (1970's). I've heard the mag issue is the placement of the follower pin on the side of the mag. But it can be removed and re-installed on the other side with little difficulty.

The big difference between the MK-1's & 2's is the slide stop feature on the MK-2. But there is a way to modify the magazine so the bolt will stay back after the last shot (search the Ruger Forum for that too). Most everything else is cosmetic, add on's and barrel weights/lengths. The MK-2 style is also available in a polymer frame version that approximates the grip angle and safety/slide stop controls of the Colt 1911 design (if you want a cheap ammo understudy for a 1911).

To your final question - no, there is nothing wrong with the MK-1's. About the only way to wear one out is to leave it soak in salt water for months or use it for a hammer. I've had one since 1976 and have run many thousands of rounds through it. The finish is a bit worn, but it shoots as good as it did new. The MK-2's are just available in a wider variety of finishes, sights, barrels, etc. if you are looking for particular extras.

The MKII also has a firing pin stop. As mentioned earlier it has a slide lock as well. I wouldn't worry about it being a MKI, but there are plenty of MKII's to choose from as well, so take your pick.

Thank everyone for the great input. I can not get the pistol today because the new law no longer honor the military discharge paper and I have to provide difference kind of paper to proof my residency.This new law is like a slap in the face to all Californian who ever put on uniform and served in the military ,unless they serv 20 years and retire their service time don't count for anything. Sad, sad , sad.
