My Custom Hi-Power (many pictures!)

I recently got my Hi-Power back from Ted Yost (http://www.tedyostguns.com/).
Originally, I was just going to have new sights put on. But then I figured since that would require refinishing the slide anyway... I ended up having quite a bit of work done: Novak sights, flat-top & serrate slide top, front & backstrap stippling, hammer recontour, built up strong-side safety, reliability tune, crown, some considerable trigger work, dehorn, and refinish with matte bead-blast and polished slide flats in blue.
As is apparent, the pistol turned out GREAT. And it shoots as good as it looks.
You can click on any of the images contained herein for a link to a page containing a large version (768x512); if you then click on those again, you will get a version that's very large (1500x1000).
Very dark blued finish, rear stippling.

Does one dare ask what these enhancements set you back? Or is it in the category of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it!"

Whew, that is SWEET. I'm with Grayrock, if you don't mind telling us what work like that set you back.
Inquiring minds want to know.

hehe
checked out your picture page Zak. Good looking guns, esp. the CZ, I am thinking about trying one of those out soon and like seeing all the pics I can.
Anyway, just thought I would tell you that I had a hard time finding the pictures of your Llama... found some pictures of some funny lookin' Alpaca things, but no Llama pistols. :)
("you might be a gun nut if you think pictures of llamas are pictures of pistols, not animals!" sounds like it should go in a different thread....)

Grayrock, Nalapombu,
It's more affordable than you might think. Let me put it this way: would I rather have three (more?!) Glocks, or this BHP?
Litlman, Tamara,
It was pictures like these that got me into Hi-Powers about a year ago. In particular: Mr B. Roberts' review of his Wickmann BHP (http://www.ont.com/users/kolya/HiPo.htm) pretty much did the trick.
The first few times I picked up a BHP at the shop, it didn't do anything for me. Adding a good set of thin grips (Spegels or thin Micarta) and fixing the trigger improves a stock BHP considerably and you've got a good CCW gun right there. Spending a bit more.. basically rights all the remaining wrongs. (No, it still doesn't shoot .45! ;) )
swingcatt,
The CZ is a good gun for the price, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Yes, I do have a bunch of CZ's...
The alpaca-lookin' things actually aren't mine, but are owned by a friend.

BevrFevr,
Here's another one of the flat-top.

The spot visible on the slide is a film/scan defect, not on the pistol.

Now that is an awesome Hi Power. I like that one as much as I like Mad Dog's custom Hi-Powers.

They are Spegel's.............
Zak Smith
May 20, 2003, 11:14 AM
Yup, just a standard set of checkered Spegel grips.
To make a standard MKIII feel and look much better than stock, just putting on a set of the Spegel grips (or the thin Micarta grips from Brownells) goes a long way to thinning the pistol and making it fit the hand better.

I always like how Ted re-contours hammers so they don't bite. Nice & smooth looking.

Very fine looking piece! :) Those HPs are just one of those models that are hard to not take a second - and third - look at. Although I do not have one in the stable, it is one that I hope to add someday. I have never looked at Spegel grips, but I those have me interested in at least one set.

Ironic
I have been thinking for the last month about sending one of my High Powers in to someone and having it "tricked out". I don't know what I want done, or who I want to do it, but I eventually want to do it.
Very nice looking handgun. As was mentioned, the custom BHP is one of the best looking guns out there.
I will be over near Chino Valley in July for the Gunsite 250 course. I wonder if this could develop into something ?

Ya gotta give it up to Ted Yost. I sent my Colt 91 off to him after the local hack butchered her something awful. It came back more beautiful than I could have hoped and she shoots like a dream. I just love Ted's "sharkskin" stippling technique.
I've been looking into the purchase of a BHP for some time (it's a JMB design, after all) and seeing pics like this, especially out of Ted's shop, really puts the craving to me.
Congrats on a fine weapon, boss.

Very very nice looking BHP......very nicely done. I do however, have a visual rebutle for this statement:
"The CZ is a good gun for the price, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Yes, I do have a bunch of CZ's..."
""MMMOOOOOOOOOOOOO"""""""""" :D

May 25, 2003, 10:31 PM
PCRCCW, The saying refers to a SOW's ear, not a Cow's ear. A sow is a female pig. A cow is a large bovine from which beef and dairy products are derived.
Sows don't go "MMoooooooo".

Where can I get one of those CZ thumb safeties to replace my Browning one?
Zak Smith
May 26, 2003, 01:35 AM
The CZ thumb safety obviously will not fit a BHP, however, there are several sources for extended BHP thumb safeties: Cylinder & Slide, and Ted Yost can build up your stock safety to be 1911-like, as seen in the pictures.
