AOL censorship

May 16, 2003, 12:56 AM
I will be going on leave next week. Destination: Portland, OR. I was checking the Rose City Gun Collector's website to check show dates. Alas, no show while I'm home. I then perused the vendors and found this:

This makes me very angry. With all the trash floating around on the net that goes uncontrolled, AOL chooses to pull this stunt. I want everyone to think about changing ISPs. There are plenty of them out there.

I would never EVER consider infecting one of my computers with AOL's virus, er... browser, much less using their "services."

geez...people actually let AOL's junk software invade their systems?

There are much better alternatives for much less. That actually SUPPORT 2nd Amendment groups.

As for me, AOL CD's make great bird-scarers and Xmas tree ornaments. Drink coasters is what we primarily use them for at my house. I've even got the Incubi collecting them to keep soft drink can rings off the coffee table. I consider it a civic duty to keep AOL CD's out of the hands of the Unknowing.

I think that the fun in politics died at about the same time that tar and feathers went out of style.

I like to use the Cds for frisbees. I love getting them in the mail as it means they spent more money for nothing :D I used AOL for 3-4 years then got sick and tired of it, now we just usea cable modem.

People still use AOL??

There's a group that you can send all your AOL cds to and when they get enough, they are going to dump them on AOL's lawn.

My son loves to play stacking games with the CDs. I figure they will also make good targets although they are kind of a mess to clean up.

A good place to send all the CD's that you manage to collect (that you don't use for targets anyway :D )

I'm a pc tech, and if I had to stereotype, the most brain dead, clueless people ALWAYS have aol.

Truly anything is better than A-O-HELL

I have talked to people who believe that AOL IS the internet, and that AOL runs the whole thing. Pretty good marketing. These are probably the same people who pay AOL for tech support when it screws up their system. Even better business decision.

Conclusion: Stupid people are AOL's bread-and-butter.

I must defend AOL for some members. My mother is 59 and lives by herself. AOL is perfect for her... simple to use for e-mail and basic surfing.

I hate AOL myself, but there is an audience for it. Please do not generalize all AOL users as "the most brain dead, clueless people "

A.O.L. has been practicing censorship and anti-Second Amendment bigotry for years, and so won't ever receive a shiny Truman dime's worth of my money.

AOL is good for those tin cans the CDs come in. If you shoot in the junkyard, try stringing up a bunch of AOL CDs. You can get more AOLs at your local post office if you run out. :D

I've been on the inside of a major computer company since 1994, before the internet had taken off and was involved with computers for about 8 years prior to that. I don't like AOL, I can't stand AOL! If I had a dollar for everytime I've had to fix a computer issue related to AOL... wait a minute... I was paid everytime. :p

Say what you want about their politics or their software (which is definitive crap) but I personally know two people that their absolutely only option (without resorting to long distance) when they first got internet access was AOL because they set up the infrastructure before anyone else did. Multiply this across the entire country and I'd be willing to bet at there are literally a million AOL users were in the same boat at one point. So... more power to 'em. Less folks to clog up my bandwidth. ;)

AHHH... nice to see a properly utilized AOL CD.
There must be jillions of these floating around the universe....
If only they could be used for good rather than evil.

AOL sucks the fat one, but then again Keith's isn't that much better.

If you stop by Keith's, you'll know what I mean.

Here are a few other good places in the area:
