Could someone explain the function of the "locking block" on this pistol and why it seems to be the source of failure in some cases?

The M9 is designed with what's called a falling locking block mechanism. Basically how it works is that when the slide is to the rear the locking block is resting down inside of the receiver. When the slide is sent forward the locking block moves up and out of the receiver and locks it and the barrel in place with the slide. It does this with two locking lugs that coincide with cutouts on the slide. That is the best way I can explain without pictures. Unfortunately, I have never figured out how to post pictures here.

The locking block has been known to break in the past. I myself have replaced quite a few of them on our training weapons. Also, keep in mind that these weapons have anywhere between 30-50,000 rounds currently on their round count. The lifespan that the military requires of it's sidearms is 30,000 rounds and the M9 finished those tests with flying colors. I have put about 8000 rounds through my personally owned beretta with no problems.

I cannot say for sure when the design shortfall was indentified. (Late 90's perhaps) But beretta did change the design of the locking block by rounding of a few edges here and there. I myself have not identified a major difference bewteen the two, I only know that you cannot use the same plunger for the both of them.

All in all my M9 is one of the most reliable firearms I have ever owned or had the pleasure to shoot. If the locking block does break it is only a 20 dollar fix.
