well when I go hunting I have 6 extra mags on me...plus my 25 rounder for my HK. I have no intention of dieing because of a lack of shooting back.

Magazines? Anybody that carries a revolver is going to answer no.

Yep!

I just got in from walking the dog and took 'em off. I'm a lefty, so my Kimber Ultra CDP officer's sized .45ACP is on my left hip, and a Safariland double magazine holder, (with the magazines carried one above the other, with bullets facing upward) on the right side. VERY stealthy.

As someone said recently, it is foolish not to take backup ammunition. When you can comfortably do so, it is very wise to carry along backup mags . . . and absolutely no sane reason not to.

It is just as wise to carry along a non-leathal deterrent too, such as pepper spray . . . since the last thing we want to do is to have to shoot someone and get tied up in the court system defending our justifiable actions.

Many folks forget the pepper spray . . . and are forced to go from "helpless victim" to fatal shooter with no steps in-between. Not smart.

I clicked "yes" but I think really I should have picked "sometimes". The vast majority of the time I do, but when I need to travel light, that is among the first things jettisoned though never the handgun.

Yes if you count speed loaders or speed strips. I rarely carry an auto but 99% of the time I carry a spare mag too.

Pepper spray? If I ever felt my life was in danger I will opt for my side arm everytime. I don't trust pepper spray to stop an attacker. Yes I carry a 1911 chambered with a topped off 8rd mag and 2 mags on my hip.

No. I carry a Ruger P97 with 8 rds. Many will probably disagree but I refuse to load myself down like a LEO. When I leave my house I'm not going out looking for trouble or to war and I'm pretty careful about where I go. If 8 rds of .45 ACP aint enough I'm in the wrong place anyway.

Some people carry spare mags to balance out the weight of the gun a little bit. I do sometimes.

Yes carry a p14 with 2 spare magazine in the winter and a kimper pro carry hd in 38 super with 2 spare in the summer.

I do sometimes but not as often as I'd like to. Chances are you won't need more than what's in your gun but the bigger issue is if a mag fails you'll really want a spare. The only problem is finding a nice IWB mag holder that isn't uncomfortable to carry for someone with a bit of a spare tire so I don't have to carry one or two in my pocket. The ones I see are usually OWB and a couple of glock mags sitting on your hip kind of defeats the whole "concealed" idea with the gun.

Yes, unless I need to travel really light. As said before, the extra mag is for primary mag failures because, to me, the likelihood of a prolonged shootout seems remote. Of course, I would really hate my last sight on Earth to be that of my slide locked back and my last thought to be knowing that the bad guy's isn't.

I'm not sure I would carry a speed loader if I carried a revolver. But speed strips are a maybe.

Now my problem is with a cell phone, light (at night), extra mag, knife, gun, and OC, I'm really starting to feel like I need Batman's utility belt. Picking which goes on the belt and which goes in the pockets is a work in progress. It's probably why I opt for my murse or fanny pack more often than not when I have to go heavy.

That said. The extra mag is usually the last one voted off the island when I have to trim down.

I do, absolutely; for several reasons.

First, I carry a Para-Ord Para-Companion, so I only have 7+1 in the gun. 14-16 extra rounds is a nice little insurance policy in case I miss or get jumped by more than 1 or 2 guys. (There was a recent armed robbery of a local Waffle House by 4 guys.)

Second, I spent too many years in the military to not realize just how much of a PITA Murphy can be. He will attack you at the wrong time. I like having a backup mag or two, just in case my primary mag fails. If one does fail, now I have a new primary and one reload. Sounds a lot better than no working mags. At least, it does to me.

Third, and the least important reason, the extra mags do balance out the weight of the gun.

Sometimes.

My usual carry is a P228--I think 14 rounds should be sufficient.
If I am carrying my 1911, I usually have a spare mag on me, and definitely a speedloader or speedstrip if I'm carrying the K-frame (not often).

I do, however, keep a spare mag for every handgun I own in my glovebox. Nice to know there is a reload, regardless of what I decided to carry that day.

I carry a 1911A1 clone when hunting, double mag carrier on the offside for balance. Should an animal need a coup-de-gracie, the pistol gets that task. Should someone contest a kill in a less than polite fashion, well, I hunt with my M1A and nobody's done that yet. I have a 10-rounder blocked to 5, with a 20-rounder full of M80 Ball stowed. All I get from the game troopers is a smile.:D

Knowing that I should carry at least one spare mag for many of the reasons already cited, I don't. I keep an extra in the vehicle but not on my person.

At least one, most of the time two, and I always have more in the car or truck. The magazine is the weakest link in an autoloader, since I normally carry a 1911, a spare mag is pretty easy to carry.

I dont normally carry a reload for my .38 snub. Its more of a "grab it and put it in a pocket" pistol.

Usually, no. I carry a second gun instead.

I also don't carry extra mags. The 10+1 rounds of 10mm in my G29 should be enough to stop anything here on the mean streets of Gainesville. However, if I had reason to be out in the woods with the critters (e.g hunting) I would carry extra mags.

Magazines can fail, get lost, get damaged, or just need to be removed when clearing a jam.

I carry extra mags because I don't plan to wait for the police with an empty firearm and hope the problem has been dealt with and I am now done.

Without a functioning magazine most semi-autos are just a single shot that sucks to reload.

If you have a magazine disconnect in your semi-auto you don't even have a single shot if the magazine is out of your firearm.

Nope, just 10 +1 in my XD 9 SC. If I need more than 11, I've obviosuly picked the wrong BG to tangle with...:uhoh:

Isn't this the same question?

So what? Hang around long enough and you see the same things come up over and over and over again. At least he wasn't asking "9 vs. 45".

(Just feeling a bit grumpy today. Having three teeth extracted will do that.)

Depends on the handgun. With a Glock Model 23, 35 or 21 no but have two extra in the car. With a 1911 yes on the belt.

Wow! I am impressed at the cal that most of you carry. I would expect to see that with LEOs and people traveling in dangerous areas but not so many big guns.

You must think me a wimp with my little Kel-Tec 380, with two clips. A lightweight carry gun in my front pocket and a folding knife. Mostly worry about walking with my wife and running into a pitbull or another mean dog.

Never had a serious bad encounter in my 65 years on this planet. I carry for defense only and would avoid an encounter, and resulting lawsuit if at all possible.

I will carry a 45 ACP in the Oregon woods for safety. Big cats, black bear, nutty two legged critters in the woods.

I always carry one spare magazine for my pistol. I have seen and experienced magazine malfunctions: at IDPA, 3-gun, and Pistol Action League matches, etc. Where the only way to clear the gun was to drop the magazine and immediately insert another. I think it is unwise to trust so completely the one part of the pistol most likely to fail.
