I'm looking at buying a Vector Uzi semi auto. This gun has the factory ugly looking barrel that to my eye is way too long.

In Maryland can I buy this gun, then at a later date have the factory barrel either chopped or swapped out and then pay the $200 SBR tax? Or do I have to register the gun as an SBR at the time of purchase, even though I have not yet done the mods? Thanks!

you can submit the application to make and register a SBR on a Form 1 after the sale. however you cannot cut the barrel down until after the Form 1 is approved from ATF.

you can download the ATF form here:

According to the NFA FAQ (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/wbardwel/public/nfalist/nfa_faq.txt), SBRs are legal in MD. So you can send a pair of Form 1's (http://www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/f53201.pdf), some additional paperwork, and a $200 check to BATFE. You also need to engrave your name, city and state on the frame, receiver, or barrel. When the approved Form 1 comes back you can shorten the barrel to the desired length.

Form 1 back in your hands with stamp on it BEFORE BEFORE BEFORE BEFORE chopping it!
I agree they look really awkward with the long barrels. Have fun with the new toy!
