NIKON Customer Service???

First off, I am a brandnew member even though I must have read about every post on this board over the last few months as a guest. I must say there is an astounding amount of great information here and I can see I am in for many late weekend nights browsing for info.
Anyway on to the question...I purchased a NIKON Monarch 6.5-20X44 last February and didn't even mount it until this summer. Upon sighting it in I noticed that my groups were excellent at any power up to 16X, after 16X I start seeing 3" groups. So I figure I'll send it in and get it repaired right??? Well NIKON wants to charge me $170 for repairs!!?? I call CS and complain and they tell me I should have sent a proof of purchase with the scope. I guess I figured that a lifetime waranty from NIKON was more reputable than that. I know I should of kept the receipt but I doubt I could have kept it around for a lifetime :confused: . So I went to the store I bought the scope from and they were able to write me up a new sales slip and back date it.
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with NIKON customer service and what kind of experience did you have?
