I just aquired this beautiful, blued, Dan wesson 41 Mag, and about 500 rounds of ammo. This gun has one of the best SA triggers, that I have felt, and looking forward to shooting it.I cant find a model # anywhere, just says 41 Magnum CTG, its probably an 80s vintage. Any guesses?:)

My father owns a nice .357 Dan Wesson. Needless to say it is my favorite gun of his.

Love my Dan's!
By the where where was it made? Palmer? Monson? that might help on the identification. I am not a 41 fan, so I don't know if they go on the 15 frame series.

You lucky dog. I have been looking for a DW in .41 for ages. They are like hen's teeth. I have DWs in .22 and .357. I had one in .44, but sold it ( I still get to shoot it every now and then).
If it's a blued model then it's a Model 41. If it's a stainless model then it's a Model 741. It's a large frame revolver, the 15 series is the small/medium frame revolvers.

I recieved this gun from my stepdad, and he told me when he bought the gun, he should have bought the extra barrels, said for $225, their was a 6", 4", maybe a 10". Wonder if there still availible? Can a scope be mounted directly to the vented rib? That would make a nice 100yrd plinker:D

"Can a scope be mounted directly to the vented rib?"
The scope on my 10" barrel is mounted via drill and tap - my barrel is the vent rib, heavy (VH). There were a few companys making scope rings that clamp to the vent rib. Barrels were/are available in 2-1/2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch (for the model 15). Check the Dan Wesson web site, Gun Broker, Auction Arms and ebay if you are in the market for more barrels...
From a bench rest I can sit and shoot out a targets bulls eye at 50 yards all day long with that 10 barrel (and scope).

I believe that barrels can be ordered from Dan Wesson. A few months ago (just before the DW & CZ merger) I ordered one and now have it..

ChevellRCR,
Those seem to be stainless barrel shrouds by the stock number. Do they still make blued shrouds?
ChevellRCR
October 26, 2006, 08:19 AM
I needed stainless so I just asked for stainless. I am sure that they make the blued also as I just inquired about barrels for a 22 Dan Wesson in blue. I was told they make both blue and stainless for it. Just to be sure, send an email to this address with your specific needs. It usually takes a day or two for her to respond.

I have a Model 15-2 .357 magnum in stainless. I bought it used about ten years ago (Monson gun) with a 6" barrel. I bought a 4" full lug barrel from CZ/DW about a year ago. It took exactly one week for delivery!
I've since had a Wolff reduced power spring set installed as I use the gun for IDPA. Hogue makes a great grip (rubber or wood) for the DW.
Based upon my experience, I'd highly recommend a DW revolver to anyone (and I have). You should get many years of enoyment of of your .41 magnum. I'd love to have one myself.

I've had my 15-2 for over thirty years. It's digested several thousands of assorted rounds and nothing has broken or worn-out. It's still my most consistently accurate .357 revolver.
FYI, the "VH" describes the barrel shroud configuration it was shipped with. It stands for "Vent Heavy". There is usually a numeral for nominal bbl length there too (2,4,6,8,10). Blued models (with the exception of the M-14/15 .357s) generally use the caliber as model number, with SS models adding a "7".
The barrel markings are the quickest way to determine the approximate time frame when your revolver was produced. From 1968 to 1991 the firm was called the "Dan Wesson Arms". The company was restructured in 1991 and revolvers made after January 4, 1991 were marked "Wesson Firearms Co., Inc.". The original company went bankrupt in 1995. In 1996 its assets were acquired by the "New York International Corp." First full production of new models was in 1997. these so-called "New Generation" models were laser marked on the frame with "NYI" in an oval above "Dan Wesson Firearms" with the next line "Norwich, New York, USA". The marque is now owned by CZ-Uhersky Brod.

Interesting, as my Dan Wesson Action Cup is marked "Dan Wesson Arms", yet the Blue Book Of Gun Values indicates the Action Cup guns were produced in 1992. Could it be they were produced before '91 and sold in '92?

The Blue Book has quite a few errors about many of the guns.

I have had a DW744 .44 magnum for about 20 years. It originally had the 8” heavy barrel. I used it very successfully in handgun silhouette competition. After I got out of that, it sat in my safe. The cylinder locking bolt wasn’t working properly. A year ago I finally got around to sending it to the factory for a new bolt and a 6” light barrel. It is now much more useful to me. It is very accurate and very strong. I like the Pachmayr grips for it. Double action trigger isn’t all that great, but single action is very nice.

You could say I like Dan Wessons! I also now have a 6" Barrel for the 44 mag that I got from CZ. I also had my brother make me a muzzle brake barrel nut from a rifle brake. Works very well. I have a couple of pictures if you want to see them. I have posted them at Greybeardoutdoors.com before.

I have a Dan Wesson 44VH 8" that I got thru a left handed trade. I love it. I was shooting it the other day and with a 1.5X sightron scope on a aimpoint base it was grouping 180 gr rem factorys,200 xtp handloads, and 240 gr noslers with equal accuracy( about 3" off hand at 25 yards)
At some point I'll get a few more barrels I check on auctionarms from time to time but nothing seems to pop up for 44 mag.

Quite often there are barrels on Evil-Bay, and although most of the time they are sold for much more than a new DW one, every now and then you can find a good deal.....just a thought...

I have one of the earliest DWs made with the external barrel nut I picked up about 1980. A model D-11 with a serial # of 65XX in .357mag. It has both 2.5" and 4" barrels and housings for it as well as the barrel tool; spacer gauge; three different grips; original box and O/M. It's in really good condition and I still use and hand load for it. It's one piece that's going no where from my collection.;)

One of my good friends has an original Pistol Pack in .357mag. The barrel lengths range from 2"-8", if memory serves me. I remember this being one of the most accurate revolvers I ever shot. The only complaint I had was it constantly sprayed lead and burnt powder from the cylinder/forcing cone gap. I think he still has it.

Absolutely LOVE my DW .44!!!!!!!
Bought it in 1985. Blued 44VH-8. I paid $266.00 for it, NEW! I wanted stainless, but, they were not available when I had the cash.
Trigger pull was horrendous. Sent it back to DW.
Three chambers were real tight. Empties wouldn't even extract.
DW fixed everything. The DA trigger pull is now incredible. The SA trigger pull is extremely light. Not real sure of the actual let-off, but, I wouldn't be surprised to find out it is less than 2 lbs.
SUPER accurate. When involved w/ IHMSA, it was fantastic. (Barrel/cylinder gap set at .003" instead of .006" per the book.)
Bought a VH-4 assembly after I left silhouette competition.
Took a wild boar in Tennessee in 1994 with the VH-4 barrel assembly and Pachmayr stocks.
ONE shot . . . at seven (yes, 7) feet! Neck shot. Dropped that 265 lb boar like it was hit by a freight train.
This revolver will NEVER be sold.

Hmmm. Hey mister, what you got in that briefcase?
Why, nothing son, just some important papers. Let's have a look see.
This is my Dan Wesson Pistol Pack 15-2VH. I've had it since 1987, It cost 599 plus tax back then. I wanted the stainless version but by the time I got my permit the one I had seen was gone. Since the pistol pack was scarce, even back then, I opted to get this one I saw in a different shop. Man I'm glad I did. The barrel lengths are 2.5,4,6,and 8.75 inches. It's got the Pachmyer grips on it, and you can see all the other goodies that came in the American Tourister attache case.

I have three Monson made Dans: a 22, 357, and a 44. The 44 I bought with the 10" bbl for IHMSA silhouette competition back in the early 80's. When shooting prone, I could shoot volleyball sized groups at 200meters--OPEN SIGHTS. My eyes and body aren't good enough to do that anymore, but the gun still is. I'll have those Dans til I die. Regards.

Hi!
My first post here, writing from Sweden up in northern part of Europe.
Bought a Dan Wesson today. Payed $150 with 2,5", 4" and 6" barrel. The previous owner has passed away so I have very little info about it. What I do know is that the wrench & gauge is missing. I have written to CZ/DW to find out if you sitll can get a 357 wrench from them. I have thought of making a temporary wrench from liquid metal (paste that hardens) in the meantime.
I'll post a pic as soon as I get it. Over here the permit takes quite som time to get from the police, at east a month (a few years ago it could take up to 6 months!).
I have found grips for it in several webshops but it seems like most of them won't ship outside the US. Hard times for a grip-o-holic like me...

Welcome to THR, Pelleman and congratulations on an extraordinary (at least by US price standards) bargain on the Dan Wesson.
IMO, the idea of using a "liquid metal" product to cast a temporary substitute barrel wrench is one that will likely disappoint you in practice. I very much doubt that one would be able to withstand the torque loads generated in use without breaking. While those loads aren't of a large numerical value, relatively speaking, they are concentrated on two points with very small surface areas. I do not think that any such non-homogeneous composite product would be up to the task.
If you can't get a wrench from CZ for some reason at this time, you might want to try The Gun Parts Corp. (www.gunpartscorp.com) here in the USA.
While they do not always have them in-stock in sufficient numbers for inclusion in their catalog, they often have a few on-hand. They will ship internationally, subject to conditions which should be listed on their website.
Another option would be through one of the dedicated Dan Wesson websites. You may be able to purchase one from a private party that way. There are also auction/sales websites here such as Gun Broker.com where one might be found. Worth a look, anyway.
The barrel/cylinder gap can be set properly with a simple "feeler" gauge of 0.005-0.006" thickness. You can work out the metric equivalent at your convenience.
FWIW, you can almost certainly find a selection of aftermarket grips for your DW at one of the above mentioned sites, too. While I'm not familiar with Swedish/EU laws regarding importation of firearms parts or accessories, I'm sure that you should be able to find some way to get such relatively innocuous items as a wrench or grip without too much trouble or expense.

November 20, 2006, 09:29 PM
Thanx for the info!
I have found several wrenches on e-bay. Many states that they won't ship overseas but I sent some polite e-mails and sure - they could send it over here. It's not Afghanistan after all... :D
The interesting thing is that it is very easy to import things here. If you want to buy from abroad you just tell the clerks att the policestation and you get an import licence for free along with your permit. The hard part is to get the stuff out from the US. Your borders have become very tight regarding guns post 9-11. 15 years ago we bought most of our gun and gear directly from the US via mailorder. Nowdays we mostly shop in Germany instead. The EU makes shipping very easy. One guy ordered a HK MP5K from germany and when the packade came he wasn't at home so the mailman (yes - regular mail!) left it at his neighbour instead...
I havn't shot a dan Wesson in 15 years so it's gonna be interesting. My idea is to use it for PPC competition. Mainly off-duty and 4" Service Revolver matches.
