Does anybody know how to make 6.5 MPC brass ? I think shorten the brass run a .264 sizer through the neck of a 223 then fire form it . I thought about the 6.5 Grendel but brass is to high to sling it all over the place with a AR-15. I have an AR-10A4 but its to heavy for all day use even at the range. Or in my case in the back yard.

I have a 6.8 SPC. I just don't want to get stuck with something I can't get brass for. I got stuck with a Coonan I can't get mags for and don't want to get stuck again,

Thanks,Keith

You can fireform 7.62x39 brass to make 6.5 Grendel. There are a few threads on forming 6.5 Grendel brass over at the 65grendel.com forum.

I'm guessing you could probably call RCBS and get a die set made. I couldn't find any actual specs on the 6.5 MPC, but I'm guessing it's probably a bit squatter than the .223.

Out of curiousity, why an even stranger caliber in an AR? isn't .223 good enough?

The 6.8 is a good caliber. It has some disadvantages as far as brass. But silver state ammunition is making current production runs of good clean reloadable brass. Hornaday is also tooled up and making the stuff. While I think 6.8 will stay on the fringes for the foreseeable future I think it has a pretty solid future ahead of it.

I really want a bolt action rifle that uses 5-10 rd 6.8SPC mags to feed it, so I could have a bolt gun and a semi that take the same round, and use the same magazines

6.8 SPC is good for hunting at moderate range.

The 6.5 Grendel is good for that too, but if he wants to do some competition shooting the 6.5 Grendel gives the long range accuracy. The 6.5 Grendel also makes major PF for competition while the 6.8 SPC does not. ...or if you are a prarie dog hunter the 6.5 Grendel is the way to go.

Last year's (2005) International Silhouette pistol big bore open class competition (IHMSA) was won by a shooter using a 6.5 Grendel pistol. He was the only person to shoot the 6.5 Grendel. He did not shoot this year that I know of but plans to next year. Now a friend of mine who has shot and placed nationally in the international small bore silhouette wants to go to big bore and use the 6.5 Grendel as well.

I know how it is used with handguns but what is the number with a Rifle. 6.8 SPC 130 @ 2281 = 296.53 It must be higher with a Rifle,

Thanks,Keith

Be so kind as to tell me a load with a 6.5 Grendel that will make 340 major with a 16 inch barrel,

Thanks,Keith

I'm not sure if you could with the 16" barrel - I'll have to look at other's loads as I have a 20" and 24" Grendel.

For IPSC rifle, major power is 320.

Ok, I looked up loads from AA on the Grendel and calculated major power 320 capable rounds (IPSC Rifle):

Factory 123gr Lapua you need a 24" barrel.

For a 16" barrel here are some of Arne's loads that will do it:
144gr Lapua FMJBT (.636 BC), AA2520, CCI 450 = 2275 fps
139gr Lapua Scenar (.615 BC), AA2520, CCI 450 = 2305 fps
Looks like you need around 140gr bullets. You could possibly use a uniformer to shorten up the tips of some of the heavier match rounds to allow for a few grains more powder load as well.

To make a 340 PF it looks like you need more than 16" of barrel. Competitions that use 340 major PF?

USPSA 3-gun uses 340 PF and would require longer than 16" barrel....but USPSA 3-gun requires a minimum of .30 cal as well for major PF.
