How well do ankle holsters work for a J frame?

I know an ankle holster is probably kind of slow to draw from, but other than that, do they work?
If so, what brands are best?

IIRC El Tejon has some experience with an Alesse which her liked well. Try to PM him.

In cooler weather I typically ankle carry my J-Frame. I have a Galco Cop Ankle Band, holds everything nice and tight, I haven't had any problems with it, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Lone, in my LEO daze I often carried a third gun (M638) on my left ankle with an Alessi rig. I liked the fact that I could draw the weapon up tight so that I could wear straight leg dungarees. Elf boot cut may be even better. This is what I showed Doc when he was down for LFI-1 and when he was in Indy for his sister's wedding.
Don't forget you cover sock, especially if you wear suits a lot like me. FME, don't let the young & nubile throw it out. "What's this stretched out sock for?":)

An ankle holster should work fine for a J Frame, I carry a Glock 19 on the ankle about half the time. :D :D :D
Best Ankle Holster on the Planet (IMHO) = Lou Alessi's Ankle Rig. It's comfortable, holds the weapon very securely (important if you're running,) and is of a MUCH higher quality than any other I've seen.
It's not cheap, around $100, but you get what you pay for.

A j frame is in some ways easier to conceal and draw than even a pretty flat semi-auto. The snubbie has a more natural shape, and the handle shape makes it easier to get your hand on it at your ankle. I carry both a Taurus snubbie and a Glock 26 in ankle holsters. Both work, but the Taurus is much lighter and much easier to draw. Naturally the Glock shoots better and has more firepower.

A Renegade is the best I've had but ankle holsters are slow to get to,

They do work good, with a couple caveats. Adjust your pants to make room, socks as mentioned, and shoes. Some pants are better than others for the ankle rig. Make sure it holds the gun tight, like a tension screw, strap, or a set up like the renegade- you don't want it to fall out.
There are better choices for holsters if you lead an active lifestyle. I say this after almost losing my J frame and not knowing it until it was found- again make sure it is tight if you have to run.
My votes for the rig go to renegade and galco, if I had to get another one.

A good one works very well, mine are Alessi.

Hopefully the ankle pistol is your secondary carry and not your primary..........

Sometimes I carry my S&W 640 in an Uncle Mike's ankle holster. I only wear it when I'm wearing my boots, because I've got scrawny ankles and the boots add diameter and help distribute the gun's weight. It's reasonably comfy.

I carry my 642 J-frame on my ankle in a Galco Ankle glove. It works very well, and is quite secure.

I have been using a bootlock by GG&G i think, it works well for me as it is laced onto the boot and does not shift...

I have carried a SW J frame or a Colt Agent in an ankle holster when working uniformed patrol for 18 years.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that it's about the fastest draw from you can make while seated in a car.
I have never been comfortable carrying a small auto in an ankle holster though. I have tried SW 3914, Walther PPK/S and Glock 36. None of them were as comfortable as the small relvolvers.

Yup. We just did seated presentations in inservice training. Drawing from your waistband sucks in a car...all the moreso if you're belted in.
Overheard at training:
Instructor: "Not bad for a first run. Officer Coronach, you were a little slow though."
Me: "Yeah, I was just shutting off the in-car camera first...."
:D  :D

I use a DeSantis leather ankle holster. It holds my S&W 337PD very secure via a thumbreak *and* a tension screw.
The gun weighs next to nothing, and I literally forget it's there regardless what I am doing (sitting in a car/running/fighting/standing for hours, etc). As noted above, it's noticably more comfortable than my stainless PPK.
I am buying a Glock 27 tomorrow (mags interchange with my duty gun), so we'll see how that goes....
PS: If I wear boots, I found that the grip would chafe my leg. This was corrected by wearing black soccer-style socks that cover my calf. Simple solution.
