For 9mm guys:
So many loads, so little time, and the debate rages on and on...
What do you carry in your 9mm...whats your load for serious defense..??
Me, 147 grain SXT..perfect fuction in my P7, P99 and BHP....deadly accurate and I assume potent enough to stop someone....
I practice with whatever is laying around.....

Hmmm... I think my P7M8 and P-228 both have 124gr +P Gold Dots in them. My BDM has 115gr +P+ 9BPLE in it.
It's what I had lying around when I loaded the mags.

On those rare occasions when I carry a 9mm it is full of Georgia Arms 124gr. +P loaded with the excellent Speer Gold Dots.
Cheap enough to both practice with and carry the same load.

124gr. NATO FMJ
Penetration, accuracy, reliability, waterproofed primer and power.
Plus you can afford to practice with what you carry without breaking the bank.
Drops mag... 115 gr STHP. Stone cold reliable, works well out of a 3.125" bbl. We ordered a case, and divided them up.
Yes I have tested and use other loadings...like Tamara...I had these , they work...loaded up and go.

Gold Dot 124 Gr +Ps here. They have a fine reputation from most any source that discusses such things and I've seen the wound they leave in a racoon. Real nasty! Good enough for me to feel well-protected. ;)
I've used a bit of the 127 Gr Rangers and while it's fine, it's too expensive and I havent shot enough of th e9mm stuff to be 100% sure myself. The Golden Sabers are also fine and I like them in 45 but again, I have never shot anything soft with them so for all I know, all the testers could be lying to me. ME! :what:

Federal Classic 147gr JHP.
Kiesler's Police Supply had a sale going on them and I bought 10 boxes of 50 for $9.97 per box. At that rate, I could afford to practice AND carry with the ammo...
It doesn't matter whether it's my Sig 225, Walther P99, or the CZ75--if I'm carrying 9mm, that's the load. All three group tightly with the ammo and all three feed it reliably.

Another vote for the 124 grain Speer Gold Dots. Why? Because I read the evaluations by the two main "effectiveness" factions, and the Speers scored well with both the "formula" group and the "statistics" group. The bond between core and jacket gives mass retention, so it works better through layers of clothes (not that it's a big issue here in Florida, where "formal attire" is a white T-shirt).
OTOH, I believe that just about any 9mm round can be effective, if the shooter places it correctly. Sure, some will do better than others in a given situation (and every situation is unique), but I sure wouldn't want to be shot with any of them.

Howdy,
My current 9mm carry load is (by departmental mandate) Remington 115 grain JHP.
I am working with a couple of the other guys in an effort to get our duty weapon changed from the S&W 6946 to the Glock 22. If that falls through, I'm going to try to get our duty ammo changed to the Winchester Ranger SXT 127 grain (+P+).
In the past, I worked for two other departments that issued the 9mm. My issued carry ammunition was as follows:
Speer 124 grain Gold Dot JHP in SIG 226
Winchester Ranger 115 grain JHP(+P+) in Beretta 92
Left to my own devices, I carry 115 grain (+P+) JHP from Federal, Remington, or Winchester, depending on what I can find and what is cheapest. Right now I have both the Winchester and Remington versions in my ammo box, but I actually like the Federal 9PBLE the most. I would go with the 127 grain Ranger SXT(+P+), but its harder to get and more expensive, so I am content with the 115 grain (+P+).

I can't carry because I'm in MD, but when I use my 9mm (a CZ 75B) for HD duties I use Speer Gold Dots (popular choice here). I do not like to use +Ps for HD due to overpenatration issues, with those prices if Georgia Arms would make their Gold Dot loads in non +P pressures I'd consider changing over.

well, at the moment she's got one magfull of Cor-bon 90gr +P JHP, and a spare mag full of Federal Hydra-shok 124gr JHP. that's 31 rounds for those keeping track at home.
I haven't decided what I really want to use. the cor-bons seem like an excessively light bullet, though they're plenty accurate. I worry a bit about over-penetration, with them, though. I was using 147gr hydra-shoks, but I decided to go with a little more speed, but not so fast as the cor-bons. I guess I should shoot 'em both and try out the gold dots. my MK40 loves them in .40 S&W.

good enough for the SS; then I'm quite sure they are good

Anything with 'tech' in the name must be super duper.
But no, really, in 9mm they have a very small initial hollow tip, so they feed just like FMJ's, even in pre-ban mags. ;)

115 Winchester Silver tip, was good enough for FBI HRT for years, oft lamented in the miami shootout but feeds well, its relatively inexpensive, shares the same point of impact with my practice ammo. Wish it was nickel cased though.

Currently....Federal and Corbon +P/+P+ 115's...smokin fast, accurate and expand. Federal Tactical, Speer GD and Corbon 124 +P's I love the accuracy the Dots provide....they make themselves look "match grade" compared even to the "other most accurate 9mm rnds"......
I play around with Remington Sabers and +P+ 115's..proven to be a couple of very nice loads also.......
I really dont think in this day and age of bullet R&D, technology and powder tech....anyone makes a "bad defensive based 9mm" round anymore.....just me.

I used to carry 124 gr Federal Nyclads.
And just today... I'm now carrying 124 gr Federal Nyclads.
Why?
Something came to me in the mail from a good friend… I can’t believe it. I am stunned. He said he was going to send a couple boxes. I didn’t expect 4! WOW! Guys, I am humbled. I’m talking about 124gr Federal Nyclad 9MM Ammunition.
In my book, the Nyclad line of ammunition is something very special. The nylon clad bullet eliminates bore leading, reduces airborne lead and provides accuracy and stopping power at standard pressure loadings. The bullet, being free of a copper jacket is able to expand nicely at low velocity. So even if your bullet isn’t racing at warp speed… it’s going to do a fine job once it gets there. Now here is the kicker… it’s doing a leisurely 1150 FPS at standard pressure. This means these cartridges are a pussycat to shoot. Meaning you can put more rounds on target quicker than you could with higher pressure/velocity ammunition. (that regular JHP ammunition requires for reliable expansion) Now, if that isn’t enough, get this… The Nyclad bullet coating has a natural lubricity to it that makes the rounds “slippery”. No – this wont allow them to defeat body armor… but it does make them more reliable when the bullet is being cycled through the action of an automatic handgun. In fact, I have seen some guns that were horrible when it came to feeding hollow point ammunition and FMJ “ball” ammunition, run flawlessly when loaded with Nyclads.

MikeJ
May 22, 2003, 11:18 PM
Its a shame that Federal quit making this round. As George mentioned one of the best standard pressure rounds for typical civilian applications (no car door barriers to defeat) due to their reliable expansion because of the soft lead. I still have a few left but put them away as a relic. I would love to know the real story behind their demise. I have since switched to Speer Gold Dot standard pressure 124 grain hollowpoints. Mike
