Is this product good for re-bluing your gun?, is it safe? any comments?

Thanks,

I've used it before, does not yield the deep blue hue it claims. It will at first but then it "wears' off and gives the gun an "aged" look. I did a 1903 hammerless that had no bluing on it and it turned out nice because the BWGB gave it a naturally faded look, in check with the gun's age.

I don't know, try it...it's not expensive, fairly easy to use and you might get better results than I did. However, make sure you only use the BW Gun cleaner when prepping the metal.

I used it to cover over some rust sports on old shotguns. Shooters not museum pieces I will states before I get flamed.

Soutex is correct, the color is not a factory match, but can still cover a blemish or a whole gun. Do not expect 1950's S&W deep coloration. Use the cleaner and a torch to heat the areas your covering. Works better with more heat. I like the product and keep it around to cover little spots.

Does it sTiNk afterwards like all the other cold bluing does...even the ones that claim to not have a sTeNcH ?? :scrutiny:

No it doesn't stink.....the cleaner on the other hand smells a little like ammonia but not unpleasant. I've used it in my living room no problem, no irritating fumes or nothing like that.

C&L is right.....it likes the heat, alot of heat. I forgot to mention, once the deep blue fades, the remaining will actually hold up pretty good. I don't know, maybe if i go for a second application of the stuff i'll get the results i want.

Sorry, I meant Axeman G

Want to throw this in for your consideration:

Brownell's Oxpho-Blue.

Gives a deep, dark bluing for maintenance situations. You can order it from
Brownell's web site.

I liked the blue wonder on a gun I did, it took 4 or 5 coats but I got a very nice deep blue.

I've tried Van's Cold Bluing (was supposed to be a good one) to touch up a spot on an old Official Police Colt. It eventually wore off, plus took the adjacent original bluing with it. :barf:

I then coated the complete barrel with Vans and used steel wool to easily remove the Van's and the remainder of the original bluing. Now that the barrel was in the white, I coated the entire barrel with Van's. After several applications, the bluing looked great but the gun smelled like a rotten egg for a year...the stench still lingers.

Rinsed in water, tried soap and water, 487 different types of oil and lubricants, etc., etc...still stinks. :scrutiny:

Van's Cold Blued barrel...looks fairly good and kinda-sorta matches the rest of the gun , but :barf:
