May be I was face to face with a guy whom might have had a gun in his pocket?

It was in an alley, the guy has both hands in his pockets (as did I), and he comes over to me asking for a smoke. Normally, this doesn't stand my hairs, but the guy is looking around as if to see if anyone else is around. This was sort of an alley niche where a perp could imagine a good place for a robbery (the locals would know it to be a fairly well visited place and time).

The gym was about to open nearby or so I conviced him that he would have a witness to his actions "any second now". He walks off, but I sure as hell believed he was looking for an opportunity. I never took my hands out of my pockets and one was very full (he had the same).

Now, I'm thinking, if I was carrying either shoulder holster or IWB, I would not stand a chance if he pulls a gun.

So now I think the best carry method is an airlite in a coat pocket with my hand on it. If a weapon was presented, I would shoot through my pocket for the only chance I have of making even odds.

Light weight revolvers, with all their limitations, would be the perfect weapon for many reasons:
a)autos would jam fired from a pocket
b)revolver caliber could be large for the pocket size
c)hammerless would be a good choice
d)light weight means I would likely have it with me all the time
e)I could get really big pockets for a really big gun

What alternative defense options can you come up with in the given senario?

Don't hang out in "an alley niche where a perp could imagine a good place for a robbery."

S&W340 pd or sc, AND don't hang around those places.

What limitations? IMO there is no better conceal carry firearm than a small hammerless revolver in 38spl or +P.

I am all for the biggest gun you can buy, but if I can't comfortable sit down, bend over, drive, or move freely, I won't carry it. Those stay in the truck.

If I am in a situation I need precise shot placement, then I guess I am SOL.

I've achieved precision placement with a S&W 642 at up to ten yards. For me, the groups open up considerably at distances greater than that. If you are having trouble with shot placement get some lighter loads (non +P) and don't neglect the dry-fire practice. Snubbies can be quite accurate, but they require a little more practice.

As far as the scenario goes, their are many methods of unconventional weapon-presentation. But these are not nearly as important as the fact that you allowed someone to approach within close range with their hands in their pockets in a dark ally. Come on man, this is a software problem, NOT a hardware problem. Check out Geoff Thompson's "Fence". It's a good strategy for maintaining distance and preserving initiative.

Heck, I live next to an alley way; thugs float'en by all the time~!:uhoh:
I don't carry out (or retrieve) my trash cans without a weapon on me.
This area has really gone south since I moved here in '68~!

It was 11:55 am. No place I could retreat to that someone could not follow, andthe locals would know it to be fairly well visited place and time

True, but so would a revolver under the right conditions.

It's all about keeping space.
