Camaroman,

Great gun! Great round!

My suggestions? Sight any of the folllowing 1-1/2" high at 100 yards.
Factory ammo: 150 gn. Winchester Silver tip or Hornady 150 gn. "Light Magnum".
Handload: 150 gn. Sierra, Win. Case, 43.5 gn. 4064, WLR primer. = 1.25" @ 100 yds. from my 788 carbine.

Stick with 150's and you'll be good. I usually use remington core-lok or winchester power point, which ever patterns best in that particular rifle.

I handload and my favorite is a Hornady Interlock P.S.P. 150 grains bullet in front of 46.5 grains of IMR4064, Federal Match Rifle Primers, and Win. cases. In my Rem. 700, 4x Leupold, it groups consistently 1 1/2" at 200 (two hundred) yards.

If I'm using my old Rem. 742 in .308, I stick with the Rem. factory Corelokt 180 grains P.S.P. They will group 1 1/2" at 100 yards. They do a fine number on elk and Mule deer, too. Older 2x7 Widefield Redfield 'scope.

I always zero three inches high at 100 yards. There are many possibilities for some long shots out here in the Rocky Mountains.

Good luck.

since I have only one rifle type in that caliber, I suppose my SA SOCOM is my favorite. I use the Federal 150 grain SP Classic. No deer yet, but the hogs in South West Georgia have grown to fear it. :)

my choice of .308 ammo is just the Winchester 180 grain Power Points. they are relatively inexpensive and readily availible at most stores that carry ammo. i picked the 180 gr so i would only have to site in the gun once with a large enough bullet to take deer , elk and black bear at around 100 yards.

last fall i got a 3 year old doe (i hunt for meat, not trophy, not that theres anything wrong with that). it was about 75 yards out and i hit it in the front as it was facing me. it went all the way through to the rear end and came out. the deer was dead instantly and dropped where it stood. my Westenauto Revelations bolt action that my dad gave me will group at 100 yards about 4", but the fault is mostly mine, not the best long distance shooter. im deadly up close with a .22 though! :D

i think the 180 grainers are same $$ as the 150's, about $15.00 or so.

I use 150 gr. Remington Core-Lokt. Decent stuff.

48.5 grains of W748 behind either a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip or a 140 grain Barnes X boat tail bullet. POI is close in my M7 Remington and they're shooting around 2800 fps, the 140 grain a little over, the 150 a little under from the 20" tube. Both shoot 1MOA accurate. I sight in for a 200 yard zero, 2.0" high at 100 yards, 7.7" down at 300. This is about 3" low a 250 yard and suits my hunting. I could sight in for a theoretical 271 yard Max Point Blank Range which would put me 2.6" high at 100 and a little over 5" low at 300, not that much difference. With the nosler I'm getting 2195 fps/1605 fpe at 300 years.

Pretty impressive little cartridge. I like it a lot!:D It's taken several deer and hogs and a few coyotes to date, one at a measured 350 yards and a tad. It's an inherently accurate round and even out of my little model 7's soda straw barrel, 1 MOA is not a problem. This little rifle does most of my rifle hunting anymore, though I'll be sitting in the stand tomorrow morning with my .30-30 Contender. I do have a little Remington 722 short action in .257 Roberts that is uber accurate that I like a lot. It's killed tons of deer, but the .308 has sorta taken first chair in the gun cabinet and the old Remington 722 is the elder statesman of the bunch.

UPDATE

I descided to try the 150 gr Win Ballistic Silvertip first. Sighted my 788 in on Thursday. Went hunting Friday and Saturday. Friday night I had a doe come walking straight at me. It was dusk and dark clouds were comming- so I did the should I... no its to late let her walk.... but she is 40 yds, she'll drop like a rock. I descided to take the shot and muffed it up. I shot right under her and saw some nice acrobatics. LOL Saturday morning, another doe pops out and grazes for an hour and a half at 100yds from me. When the sun got bright and she got a bit closer in a clearing I took a broadside shot. Hit a little high on the lungs. The bullet left a dollar coin size hole on exit. She stumbled into the brush about 10 yards and laid down. Why did it take me so long to get a .308? :)

Nice. Back strap to come. :D I'm taking my .308 out in the morning if it's not too windy. My stand probably blew over in this mess. We had winds whippin' 50 mph today down here. If it doesn't calm down tonight, it will Friday morning.

Posted this in my "Dangit" thread, but here's what came to my feeder with a couple of does this morning. Wind was dead calm until about 8:30, perfect. As usual, the .308 was a hammer. He dropped in his tracks with a large exit hole in his throat. He was facing away from me. The Nosler 150 grain BT did its job with full penetration from flank to throat. Don't get no better'n that!

150g Sierra Pro Hunter, 45g 4064, Lapua Brass, Fed GM210 primer seated mag length for a Rem700. 6 shots, 6 dead deer from 30 to 300 yards. Works for me.

My relaoder isn't set up since the move, had to opt for some store bought. These grouped quite well at sighting in (<1" @ 100yds off a rest) and dropped a 3yr old buck (had the ugliest rack in the woods) in his tracks. Great penetration and expansion. Left a nice silver dollar sized exit wound. I really like this ammo and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again.

150 gr. Remington Core-Lokts group right around two inches from my Remington Model Seven, which is good enough for me.

I generally use handloads but I have had good luck with standard win 150 power points.

Try 150gr Rem Corlokts for close range (under 200yds), and Nosler 150gr B.T. or Sierra's for longer range for deer.

For Elk, use a 150gr Nosler Part. I prefer something bigger, but my brother has killed more elk, and has never recovered a 150 Part. with his .308.

He uses an over max load of H4895. I suggest you use 45.5gr of H4895 for about 2,850fps. Kills VERY well.

Save you money for deer as they aren't hard to kill with a .308. Use the more expensive bullets for the harder to kill ELK (but NOT hard to kill, according to my brother - with a .308).

A friend of mine used my 7mm-08 and put 3 140gr Partitions at 2,800fps MV through a 1,100 6x6 bull elk in Oct.'05. First one did the trick, but the elk didn't give up till after the 3rd hit. (staggered after first hit. Stood and took the second and third, before falling over. All hits were within 4" of each other at 250yd impact distance.)

Can't argue with that !!!

2nd on the 165 gr Fusion. I dropped a 7 pt in its tracks on opening day out of my savage. Good Luck.

I've found even on stem to stern shots, the Nosler 150 ballistic tip is plenty for any deer sized game. You won't find that bullet in your deer. I have another load for hog and heavy game, 140 Barnes X bullet. I mean, it'd work fine on deer, too. It's an excellent bullet, expands readily, penetrates fully, and doesn't break up.

But, one of the things I love about the .308, it's accurate to a fault with many loads and seems to work with a wide variety of loads on game.

I'll second the performance of the partition, though I've shot no elk with it. I prefer the Barnes, better BCs, but I shoot a 160 partition in my 7mm Rem Mag and it's an awesome performer.

I don't really understand the Ballistic Tip. I mean, it expands even at .30-30 velocities, yet doesn't seem to break up in heavy muscle on deer at .308 velocities, gives great penetration. I don't know how they do that. I guess maybe the jacket design. I understand how it expands so readily, but the penetration part is what's hard to believe, if I hadn't seen it myself. Usually penetration and expansion is more of a trade off unless you're shooting some controlled expansion design like the Barnes or the Partition.
