Wife has a big dog (from the pound) that is fine with people but will attack other dogs. She obeys well if she is within 30 feet but ignores commands if she is farther away (ignores wife completely at any distance). Was thinking of trying shock collar to get her attention, get her to start obeying the "come" command from longer distances. Any brand suggestions?

I have had good history with Tritronics. No experience with any other brands.
That kind of social behavior can be a real challenge and e-collars aren't magic. You might consider some professional guidance if the problem continues. Good luck.

Well, the BEST shock collars are Teletak (sp?) made in Germany....but cost about $1800 each. They'll knock a dog off its feet if turned up high.
But, I have a much better (and cheaper solution)... Tie her to something sturdy (like a tree) with something that won't stretch(20-30 ft, we use a leather longe line, like for horses), and use a prong collar. Then walk another dog by JUST outside of her reach. Hold her until she lights up on the other dog, then let her go. A couple a times with her hitting the end of the line at full tilt will tend to make her reconsider her dog aggression.
However, if she's truly dog agressive, your gonna have a constant battle with this. Find a dog trainer in your area that trains for Schutzhund sport (because they are used to "tougher" dogs, many of which are dominant/dog aggressive.)
P.S. I trained Schutzhund Sport for years....And one of my males actually worked through being zapped by a Teletak...You could see him twitch, but he kept on going. I suspect that if your dog is engaged in the fight, she'd ignore the electric as well. Even my highly trained dogs, when they fight require me to get in and "kick some butt", to get their attention. And in all my years of dog training, the only times I've ever been bitten was breaking up dog fights (My own dogs!) Be careful!

I had one from Cabelas. It worked good but didn't last too long. I also enlisted a trainer to help me. If you shock at the wrong time you can make the problem worse. Call a trainer and I'm sure you can work through this problem. I've recently discovered a better training method. Check out the dvd called "train your dog" It's on ebay for like $20.

Sure, I wouldn't use it for that anyway, might make her hate other dogs more. I just want to convince the dog that we have some influence when she's out of reach, get her to "come" better.

Did something like that once for a dog that kept running off (just line, no prong collar). Worked fine, convinced her we had magic human powers.

A Tritronic ecollar is a great tool for training when used in the right.
