Another Reason That Communism Sucks

I acquired one of those Romanian .22 training rifles a few years ago just for the halibut, and it has been sitting around doing nothing all this time. Well last night I got the itch to make it nice and give it to the kid as a "you've outgrown your Lil Buckeroo" present.

The trigger always sucked on it, rough, super heavy pull, just plain ugly, so I took that apart and polished a few surfaces with a fine stone and got things moving nicely. Their machine work on those surfaces looked like a kid got loose with a course die grinder. Once that was done, the trigger worked smooth and now has about a 6lb pull, good for the kid, I think.

Next was getting the bolt to close smoothly. the cut on the receiver that the bolt handle follows when it is closing and cocking also looked like it was cut by a kid with the same course die grinder. I got that smoothed out and polished up, and then did a touch up on the bluing with some Birchwood Casey's Blue in the bottle. Now the bolt opens and closes nice and smooth as well.

But the real sin happened just now, when I got to sanding off the ugly, dark, crappily varnished finish on the stock. When I finally started to get down to some wood, I began to uncover one of the best looking pieces of wood I have ever seen! I mean this thing is worthy of even the finest hunting rifle. The grain is just gorgeous!

Once I get that stock finished, tossing that barrelled action in there is going to hurt. LMAO!!

I may have to go the distance with this thing and polish off all the finish, clean up all their crappy tooling marks and make the action worthy of the wood. Oy Vey, I should have known from it, that it would turn into another crazy project! I'm going to end up with a show quality M69?!!

I don't know what was the worst part. Was it all the crappy workmanship that went into this thing, or was it that they wasted a gorgeous pice of wood on it? Either way, commies are a bunch of dimwits when it comes to making stuff.

It is a problem but also a great hobby.

Yeah, but the important thing is that their economy collapsed and now they have to sell us all their toys. So they did something right.

"Perfection is the enemy of good enough."

Communism does suck. But, AK's work. SKS's work. In WWII Russian tanks worked in conditions German and American tanks bogged down. They are less expensive to mass produce. Its all a matter of the goal of the design and manufacturing process.

You expect pride of workmanship on a product manufactured under a centrally planned economy?

Not really. :)

I bought it just to do something like this with it someday, I guess. I knew they were pretty accurate and durable, just ugly, like most commie firearms.

No wonder their economy tanked, buying all that expensive wood to make stocks for training rifles! Stupid commies!

Post some pictures when you get a chance. I've never seen a collector grade M69 before.

C'mon, where is the pictures. Don't you have pride in your workmanship? :)

Seriously, I'm interested in how it turns out.

My digital camera crapped out on me. As soon as I get another one I'll do the picture thing. It's a beautiful piece of maple with a bunch of tiger striping. I couldn't see it through the crap finish they had on the the thing, but once I started getting through the gunk, I was like "Holy chit! Look at this wood!"

Did someone refinish that wood? It actually looks pretty good in the pictures.

Mine was about 15 times uglier. It had this super dark stain with globbed on varnish... gak! It was so nasty, you couldn't see the grain in the wood.

I finally got through all the glop and stain today. I put my first coat of stain on it just now. It's a lookin sweeeet! I'm using Minwax Red Oak to get a reddish hint to it. It was the only thing in the local hardware store that had some red without being overpowering.

BTW, did you do what I think you did to mount that scope? I had some old scope rings from my SKS laying in my draw. they were designed to mount on a rail not too unlike the one on the M69, cept there should be a groove cut in the rail just where it meets the receiver. I set the rings on and clamped them down tight, and they seem to hold ok. I'm going to hit a good auto supply house and get a small fine grinding disk for my die grinder and cut some light grooves in that rail and touch up the bluing.

my rings are actually regular size 22 rings. i just filed them down till they were small enough to clamp tight to the rail.

3 coats of oil on there now, one, maybe two to go. Looking spiffy! :)

Done. For now anyway. It came out sweet. The kid is going to love it. :)

Her birthday is 9 days away, I think it will be one of her birthday presents, along with a trip to the range and a brick of ammo. I have to find a nice sling for it now too.

Maybe soon I'll find a lathe and can give it the polish and reblue treatment.

I had an old Bushnell .22 scope I put on there, but it looks so cheesy. I also have a brand new Simmons 8 Point 3-9 in matte finish that I think will look better. That should be good for a kid's .22 I think, no?

She has a camcorder that can take stills and download onto computer via USB port. Next time she's here we'll get pictures. My digital camera is dead and my camcorder can only download via FireWire port which I don't have.

The Red Oak stain didn't give me exactly what I wanted for color but it still has a pretty unique look, especially at the bolt handle recess. The "striping" fans out right there almost perfectly fitting the recess.

One last thing, does fiddling with a Romanian M69 trainer qualify as destruction of militaria? hehehe

OK, I got a gizmo today that lets me download stills from my camcorder.

The lighting sucks, so they all came out dark. Tomorrow I will get some shots outside if the sun comes out.

Here's the best capture I got in the batch I took tonight.

This old house has crap for overhead lighting. Maybe I'll try the kid's room and see if I can get a couple of good ones in there tonight.

My MN 91/30 is regarded by many as ugly and the 48" length does make it difficult when hunting in the woods...but it really grows on you until you like it...then love it...then want to get it some brothers and sisters...M39-M44-91/30 sniper...ect

That wood looks pretty out of place on a Romanian trainer!

That wood looks pretty out of place on a Romanian trainer!

That's what I said when I started getting through the gunk. lol

Just put a nice set of Uncle Mike's swivels on it and a brandy new leather sling. Now I've officially spent more on making it look pretty than on the rifle itself.

I think the kid will be one happy little brat on Sunday. She hits the big 13.

At least she will be armed well enough to fight off the boys...

As for the other commie guns posted, yup, they work great, but the commies ain't much for looks. I have a 54R SKS, works great, burns any old crap I put in it without a hitch, but it is one ugly piece of workmanship. lol

That's working almost satisfactorily. The coloring and detail loses something in the grainy video stills though.

Still, I may get some pics of some other toys now. hehehe
