Tightening Ruger MkII upper/lower fit?

Picked up a beater MkII at the SAXET show for $150 (included Cordura holster w/ magpouch).

Just for kicks, took it shooting as-is, and it worked fine despite being filthy. When I cleaned it, it was totally gunked up inside. I soaked it in degreaser, poured boiling water on it, regreased it, and I'm still chipping chunks of carbon out of it. I'm almost worried that I've compromised its reliability by cleaning it. But I digress.

It shoots fine, but the upper/lower fit is really rattly. When the bolt is out, I can rock the upper back and forth slightly, and even rotate it slightly. Is this a result of someone breaking it down too much? Is there any way to tighten up the engagement? Does it even matter?

Goto MKIII.org and look for posts by Bullseye. He has his own website also. He describes how to do it, with the appropriate cautions. Also, if you make a trigger shield out of a soda can, that will help snug it up.

I've owned three MK's over the years: one MK I and two MK II's and I'm quite familiar with what your describing.

Yes, you can "fix" this if you feel so inclined; no, you don't need to. When assembled the gun is tight, right? It's only after you've removed the bolt-stop pin and assembly that the upper gets "loose"? That's typical, normal even; and absolutely nothing to worry about.
