Florida Concealed Permit for Military Personnel

Can anybody help clear up something that I heard this past weekend. I heard that if I have a military I.D. (which I do with the Navy Reserves) that I do not need to take a concealed permit class in Florida before I apply for my license. I am planning on getting my permit soon but busy weekends have kept me from taking the class. Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks
-Bill

Training requirements to obtain the Florida CWP as follows:
5. Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;

You may need to use a copy of your service dates/training form (can't remember what they used to call it, but it has all the stuff you would have on a DD-214 if you left the service).

Bill,
You undobtedly CAN get the permit on the basis of marksmanship training in the Navy (holding back comments on that:D ) but a more serious concern might be the "extra" stuff you get in a CCW class. Things like justified use of deadly force, when/where you're legal to carry and Not, etc. Stuff the military is generally not concerned with. Well worth making time to attend a class, IMO. Good luck.

A copy of my DD-214 was all I needed and this was last summer so it's safe to say that is all you will need. I second that which Leatherneck stated though. Take a class if you haven't before. I was fortunate enough to have been trained in the Great State of Texas, twice, for a CHL there and if you can get certified in Texas, you can anywhere so I didn't feel the need for a 3rd class.

An interesting aspect of this thread, is how does the military feel about its members carrying?

No problem as long as it is off base. Each base has it's own restrictions/requirements for firearm possession and storage while on base.
