Previously posted a thread about how high deer can jump....well here's photos from this weekends hunt. Seems the smaller deer prefer to go under rather than over. Sorry for the fuzzy picture quality....it was getting rather dark when these were taken, shutter speed stayed open too long.

One year I was headed back to camp ,walking in the snow .I picked up a deer track on the trail .I reached a tree that had fallen across the trail and I easily stepped over the tree. Checking the tracks it was obvious that the deer went under the same tree !!!

A 5-pointer I shot last year got down on his belly and crawled into the woods.

I thought it was because he was hit but I've read that deer will often go low when they're feeling threatened.

I was watching a nice fat buck trotting through some brush toward a four-strand fence, one time, figuring I'd bust him when he jumped it.

He went under.

Had to undo a little forkhorn, one time, that had gotten an antler caught in a coyote snare which was set by a hole under a net-wire fence. Quite a rodeo. A buddy of mine and I did the deed, tying his feet together first. We put him in the back of the truck and went to camp, me sitting on Bucky. When we got there, somebody asked, "Where's the deer?" I sez, "Right here," jerking the rope loose and goosing Bucky into the crowd.

Ever watched a covey of quail scatter?

I once witnessed a large-ish mature whitetail buck go under two chainlink fences that were only inches off the ground. Fast, too. Watching him get that rack under was just like watching a magician.

A little OT I guess, but we had a dog years ago who could run through gates at full speed.
He was a German Shepherd/Something Else mix and was a good 10-12" deep in the chest, and would go between the 3rd and 4th bars of the gate, a gap of approximately 8".
No video cameras back then, so I photographed him doing it with old fashioned film. He was able to rotate himself through 90 degrees and back in the course of the single bound that took him from one side to the other.
The gates on his regular routes had nicely polished sections from the constant traffic. :D

When I was a kid I remember watching Antelope go under fences when we were driving. The deer would always jump the fence but the antelope would always go under. Since then I have seen a deer go under a fence but I have never seen an antelope jump a fence to this day.

Last year I was up in a stand watching a young fork creep along the edge of a corn row. He stayed just about on his belly the whole time, except that every once in a while he'd crane his neck up and chew on some tasty bits of the nearest plant. When there wasn't anything else within easy reach, he'd crawl forward a few feet to the next set of stalks.

I have seen deer here in texas do the same thing but at a run, when spooked by a car. Nilgai, a 250-500 pound antelope, just puts its head under the bottom wire, lifts it and the next strand up, and crawls under. They can jump but are too lazy. If they are running full out, they just go through a 4 strand wire fence without stopping. They are very destructive of fences.:what:

My cousin was hunting with my gramp once and they were driving a a patch of woods. My cousin was talking to my grandpa when he noticed a bit of brush moving between them. My gramp says my cousin got this screwy look on his face all of a sudden and when the brush got from in between them he blasted it with a round of 00 buck (back when you could still use it). My gramp was just about to give him a hard time for shooting the woods when he noticed four hooves sticking up from the grass. It was a ten point and it had been belly crawling between them. :)

"...had been belly crawling..." Ninja Bambi sneaking up on them? Bambi will do whatever it takes to get where he wants to go. No matter how big he is.

Thats what i said too. I also asked if he had been wearing camo face paint and had a knife clenched in his teeth. That got me a smack in the head and a "Don't be smart you dang kid" from grandpa.
