CZ P-01 - Good quality?

So I went out on my search for a nice conceal carry firearm today. I didn't buy anything because I am trying to keep my options open this time and get the best gun I can find instead of the best of the companies I like.
Well I found a CZ 75 P-01. Its the compact version I guess and its a 14+1 9mm with a decocker. It really felt good. I liked almost everything exept that ultra thin or slide that my fingers had a tough time grasping. After a few tries I was starting to get used to it.
Please don't start with any 9mm VS 45 stuff because I owned a 9mm before and I currently own a 45. Also I am pro-buying American products first, but I have searched and searched and so far haven't found a compact American pistol to fit my needs. If you know of one, feel free to suggest it.
I have heard a lot about CZ rifles lately, and their quality. Are these really that good of pistols? Whats the accuracy like?

If you do a search, I think you'll find almost unanimous praise for the CZ P01 :)

The CZ family of pistols are among the best duty guns in the world. Yes they are rivaling SIG and HK (getting there anyway). they have a reputation as being very accurate and ergonomic.
Don't sweat it not be USA manufacture. I have two Pistols myself, one .45acp one 9mm. Both are Hungarian FEGS. Go figure.

I have one. 2300 rounds with no cleaning or lube, zero problems. I replaced the guide rod with a steel one and got 2 FTF jams, so I'm going back to the plastic guide rod.
Good little gun. Make sure you get the mags with rubber baseplates.
Edit: Don't forget that a Kadet .22LR kit will fit EVERY (I'm 95% sure) DA/SA pistol CZ makes, including the P01. Best $239 I ever spent.

How is the field stripping of them? I hear you need a Bic lighter or something. Can I not do it by hand?

Plastic guide rod? :scrutiny:
Not even my old G19 had a plastic guide rod.

Hi Outlaw,
The manual says to use the base of the mag to push the slide release out of the frame for takedown. I did this on my first P-01 and scratched the frame. The next two P-01's I bought I use the base of a Bic lighter, no chance of scratches.
I replaced the plasic guide rod with stainless in all three, and have sold probably another 25-30. In probably 2500 rounds, through three pistols, I have had no problems.
I bought a .22 Kadet conversion kit to use. It fits on two with no problem, the third would need to be adjusted ( owners manual tells how.) Gives you trigger time at a lower cost. Try www.budsgunshop.com or www.whittakersguns.com . Both stock CZ's, and Kadet kits.

I have had no problems with mine. Quality seems very good. You will need something to help you push out the slide release for field stripping. Other than that it is quite simple.

CZs are excellent in general and the P-01 is no exception. Mine is my daily CCW piece. Never seen a hiccup from it on the range, nor any other problems.

The guide rod doesn't affect the function of the gun at all. Besides, I bet your Glock had a lot more plastic in it, and I'm sure it ran fine. :D

Feel is a subjective thing, but I think my P-01 fits my hand better than any other pistol. It shoots darn well also. There are lighter 9mm pistols out there, but the CZ does many things well and appears to be a rock solid piece of machinery. The takedown is typical CZ (you have to push the slidestop out), but is not difficult after you've done it once. I do use the base of a mag to put enough pressure on the ball, but I haven't scratched it yet. CZ gives you a tool, but I'm a little leery of using it.
If you don't need the rail, CZ also makes a similar pistol called the PCR. It has the same ergonomics, but a cleaner front end.

What about the mag release? It seems like it sticks out kind of far. Are there any known problems of carrying the pistol and dropping a mag becuase the release gets depressed against your side or lower back?
Also, the only real issue I have found while searching is trigger bite. Is this a lot of people complaining or what is the main cause that some would have it and some would not?
I like the grip. I thought it had a Beretta feel to it. I always like the grip of those, but never felt compelled to buy one since they are full sized pistols, and for that I personally prefer a 45. The rail is fine with me since I think rails add character. ;)

It does stick out kinda far, but it's as stiff or stiffer than a normal CZ-75. I would be surprised if a mag was accidentally released (not that it couldn't happen - that's why it's a great idea to carry spares.)

The P-01 trigger does have some sharp-ish edges, especially along the bottom and the sides. They don't bother me, but I could see how they might be irritating to some. The curve of the trigger isn't for everyone, either. You could probably sand/polish the trigger to fix the former issue, but the latter one would be a problem.

If you like the P-01, but want a more "manly" caliber then look at the CZ 40P, almost identical to the P-01, but in 40 S&W..obtw a lot less expensive. Here's mine.

Buck,
I saw a pic of a 40P online but I don't see them on CZ's website. Are they out of production?
How do the CZ's with a safety work? They are still DA/SA from what I have read. Do you have to thumb the hammer down or does the safety drop the hammer? The .40 Compact looks nice.

Outlaws,
The CZs with safeties do not work as decockers. Think of them almost like single action pistols. They are meant to be carried C&L and the safety won't even engage in the hammer down position.
The P-01, PCR, etc work with a decocker instead of safety. The 75B has the safety as I described above, as do the regular 75 compacts. 75D Compacts, are in the same family as the PCR and P-01, but made with a steel frame instead of aluminum alloy.
Btw, the PCR is the same as the P-01 except slimmer due to having no accessory rail

I had my first problem with my cz pcr 2 weeks,I was shooting and the trigger would not reset.I checked it when I got home and there is a screw in the frame that holds 2 springs and it was loose. That's the only problem I've had with my 2 cz's in countless rounds-other than replacing recoil and mag springs:) .

I seem to be somewhat biased towards the PO1.

Fits me like a custom made glove, goes bang every time, and I can hit what i aim at every time. The above is my daily CCW.
The CCW backup is a CZ PCR.

I think my flush fit mags are for a CZ 40 Compact. I picked up several in a deal a while ago.

I've got a PCR, 75B, 97B and Kadet Kit. The CZ line is a wonderful line of pistols and rifles. I've got an assortment of the other brands including HK and Sigs and would sell all before the CZ. Well accept for my P7's. :)
