gunsafe/locker & humidity

Folks,

I'd like to buy a low cost gunsafe/gun locker to store my firearms. I currently have a small safe for some pistols, but I have one long arm (a Win 94 Trapper) and might buy a 22LR soon. I'm leaning towards the lower cost Homak type of safes. I live in the humid Northeast, however, so rust is a problem. The only place that would be convenient to put the locker would be in the basement, where it can get pretty humid.

I'm thinking of buying a Homak (or similar) gun locker, and then installing a Golden Rod device. Would this provide adequate corrosion protection? How do the Golden Rod devices work? do I just drill a hole in the locker, to wire the device and plug it into the wall?

Thanks,

IrvJr

First thing I would do is to purchase a dehumidifier. (appliance type) That should remove the majority of the humidity from the basement where your cabinet will be. Without doing that first, I don't think a cabinet type dehumidifier could be very effective. My cabinet is in a finished basement, I run the dehumid. during the summer months(may-sep) and have placed a bag of silica jell, which will absorb any moisture, into the cabinet. Silica jell can be purchased fairly cheap at camera stores. good luck

Yes, you just drill a hole for the Golden Rod and plug it in. It works by slightly warming the air inside the safe. Another way to go would be to place a couple of large bags of dessicant in the safe to do the same thing, without drilling a hole or finding a spot near an outlet..

Go to the local Franks Craft/Nursery supply and buy Flower Drying Crystals ( aka - silica gel) in 1#-5# cans - it's MUCH MUCH less expensive than the dedicated Army--Navy photo supply "dessicants".
Pour the crystals in a large gym sock 9 clean preferably) and hang in your safe. Regenerate in the oven as needed!! :)
