I was told by the one of the range officers at my local range that I would be abe to buy a used handgun from a person, but not a store. Is this true in the state of New Jersey?

If you are over 18 and under 21 that is probably correct.

In Ohio, if you're between 18 and 21, you can buy a handgun from a private individual without a FFL, but you have to be 21+ to buy a handgun from a FFL. But you can't buy handgun ammunition until you're 21. God, I hate gun laws. :banghead:

Hogwash.
FFLs sell used handguns in NJ.
Private handgun sales are also OK in NJ, but all the laws regarding handgun purchase permits still apply, which includes the 21+ bit.
