Sittin' in my stand this morning, a little tripod with a gun rest attached to the bottom of the seat which swivels. My buddy is in my big stand. I look off to my right about 0720 and see a nice buck running toward me. Didn't know at the time, but there were guys working cattle on horseback across the fence on the ranch next to me and they must have spooked the deer out of the brush next to the fence line several hundred yards away.

I put my contender up on the rest as swiveled around expecting the deer to slow or stop, but he just kept running even when I whistled and I never got on him. He ran within 15 yards of me under my stand. I could have just held the gun out one handed (.30-30 scoped contender) and fired on him, but your first instinct is to get a rested shot even at short range. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

It was the nicest 8 point I've seen out there in a long, long time, probably 16"-18" across (not many record book deer out there, LOL, and this one was nice for the area). He ran behind some scrub oaks and I never saw him after that. :banghead:

I know he's out there, been seeing tracks of a large buck or two. If we don't get him in the morning, I'll be after him the rest of this season.

You did the right thing. How would you have felt if you had taken a quick one-handed shot and hit him very wrong so he ran off and died slowly days later? This way you may get another chance. I hope you do. This is the prime reason we call it "hunting".:D

Yes, in my heart, I know you're right.:D I kept thinkin' if I'd have just had my rifle, but then that's why pistol hunting is harder and why victory, when it comes, is sweeter.

If that's the story he told you, I cannot imagine how bad the truth must have been. :neener:

Well, I got this one this morning. If he's the same buck I saw Saturday, my eyes were bigger'n his rack. ROFLMAO! But, this is about typical for out there, tons of deer just none of 'em real impressive. He was running with some doe and at my feeder. Rut is on I reckon. That spike I shot Sunday was chasing a doe.

I used my .308 M7 Remington on this bad boy. I've got one buck tag left (five deer county, 3 bucks) so I guess I'll pick on doe when I go back out unless I see a monster. It was cold and the wind had laid this morning, perfect conditions.
