And the great spririt smiled on me.

A little Nugent humor there. Yesterday, if you recall from my other post, I couldn't get a shot on a very nice 8 pointer. I was regretting it. I was hunting with my Contender in .30-30, though and couldn't get around to shoot at him and he wouldn't stop. He ran within 15 feet of me. I realized later why he didn't stop, had been spooked by some guys working cattle with horses on the ranch next to my place.

So, this morning was crisp and cool, no wind to speak of, dead quiet, and the moon had not been out due to cloud cover. When I took a seat in my stand, I knew this might be the morning. The deer were moving. I think they're ruttin', or maybe early rut because a small doe came by about 80 yards out and behind her was a little spike. If I'd had any patience, there might have been a nice buck somewhere behind, but the spike stopped about 80 yards out, just stood there broadside. I set the 4moa dot of my Contender's scope behind his shoulder and fired and he fell instantly. Bullet went right where it was supposed to, a little high and angled down into the off side ribs, good exit hole and penetrated all the way. He fell dead on the spot, never moved. I heard the bullet strike home with a solid thump and knew he was down.

I pulled him out near the fence and gutted him, walked back to my van to fill out the tag and get my dirt bike to haul him out. While I was at my truck, my old friend Larry with whom I hunted doves in September, got down out of his stand and was walking along when he jumped a doe. He missed it. I never heard the shot, guess I was too far off and maybe the bike was running, though it's quiet. Danged deer were movin' this morning, though. I'm going to let it rest a couple of days, maybe do a duck hunt (think the first part of the season ends this weekend), and go back out first good crisp morning again and tend the feeders. I still have that 8 point out there. It's a five buck county, so putting a spike on ice gave me some backstrap without costing my hunting that 8 point.

Nice shooting! I'm still waiting for opening day, the 18th... After the living hell I went through to get my license this year I'm hoping for a good opening day.
