Try clear shoe wax/polish. I make custom holsters and do some holster repair too. I seem to remember that is what I have used in the past. I also used a little lithium grease on one, but that stuff is real messy! :)

Switch to kydex. Its much more carry friendly in all respects.

In all reality the sound your squeaky leather is making is probably not heard by anyone but you. When I first started CCWing (is that a word?) I was mortified by the squeaks and noises my leather was making. I was sure everyone in Barnes and Nobles could hear me coming a mile away. Then one day I asked my wife who was walking beside me how loud it was. Her answer? what sound....turn out that unless the person is REAL close to you they can't hear the little squeaks. Also very few public places are quiet enough for the squeaks to be heard.

Heh. That was the first thing that popped into my head.

:)

I'm pulling an all-nighter on some critical documents, so...boredom set in :D.

How about trying silicone spray. Don Hume had suggested it for my fathers way too tight holster. If you dont use much it should work well and doesnt harm the leather at all.

I always wear a leather belt with the following gear attached: multi-tool in leather pouch, leather key loop, and palmtop computer in leather holster. This setup squeaks slightly, but no one seems to notice. Of course, my boots are much louder.

Actually, I hear that baby powder IS the answer. Apparently the squeaking is caused by pieces that are sewn together rubbing against eachother, and working talcum powder into the seams and joins will help. Don't know what it does when it gets in your gun, though.

Seriously, follow the leather makers suggestions. Most do not recommend anything be used on leather. They have 'professionally' treated and prepped the leather.

The only thing I have seen the greater # of these fine makers suggest is to put gun/magazine in a Zip-loc bag insert into leather to 'assist' with a tight fit.

Holsters are not like boots, you don't want to "walk 'em out wet".

IMO

The holster seems fine, it's the loops between the magpouch and belt that are making the noise...FWIW it's a Milt Sparks doublemagpouch (shark of course) and a Milt Sparks 32" belt (shark of course)

Skunk,
I've found that whenever I get a new holster, it always squeeks. I'm careful to choose a holster that is 1/4" larger in the loops than my belt. Over time with use the squeeks go away.

I think I kicked off a thread on this some while back ........ my Bianchi sho rig (deep winter useage mainly) has this prob ... and the sound is seemingly mostly from the lower retaining strap going round my belt .... tried most things but never cured it.

As has been said .. i guess it is way more obvious to the wearer than others!:) Still annoys me tho.

Moleskin !

Dr Scholl's gift to the shotgunner, patron saint of the blistered heel, and the squeaky mag pouch remedy.

Skunk, you gotta have some around the tacitical pad.... Foot care dept, cut to fit , peel and stick...

What else is bugging you ....;)

Just have your staff issue ear plugs to all bystanders just before you pass by. ;)

If that's not an option, Tucker recommends talc worked into the joint and then the excess wiped off. Rusty Sherrick's Hyde Glyde works for me.

Maybe that leather-squeak is just one of life's little pleasures for me...when I'm carrying on the hip in a leather holster on a leather belt with a leather mag pouch on the opposite hip...I don't know, the sound (and smell!) of leather evokes some really strong Old West-style nostalgia in me...I know that Kydex rigs make so much sense, but I love the leather gear! :)

My P7 holster is several years old, is carried daily and STILL squeeks when I shift in my chair.

So what... Nobody would have any clue that it's a holster, even IF they could hear it.

As far as the non-shooters are concerned, Guns go BANG not SQUEEK.

Standing Wolf is talking about Mitch Rosen's "Leather Lightning".
Its handy stuff.

As another custom maker...Id say dont use silicone..even in smaller amounts after a while it will start to dry the leather out...or has the possibility of doing so. Baby powder Ive never heard of but used in very small amounts shouldnt hurt anything.

Personally, Id just wear it...the squeaks will go away after the
leather gets work'd in. Just like a pair of new sneakers..leather products do require some breakin. Rigs conform to your gun and body...the mag pouch will conform to your belt.

Shoot well

As always, Standing Wolf is correct,
but even tho the Mitch Rosen product 'Leather Lightning' is OUTSTANDING
I don't think it will make the leather not squeak.

Shunk, is it the carrier, or the carrier moving on the belt causing the squeak?

Tho I had squeaking with my duty gear as each piece moved a little on the belt,
I have never had that squeaking with my CCW gear. The 'Leather Lightening' is worth buying and having,
even if it doesn't cure the problem

Besides the other suggestions above, I'd phone Sparks and ask them. I haven't had any squeaky problems with their IWB's & belts (all cowhide).

Some other leather gear did give me this same grief, to the point folks noticed me coming, and I had to quit using that stuff.

Skunk:

Is this only a problem with Shark?

I have no experience with either exotic leathers, custom or engraved guns, just not enough money in the 'safety & rescue slush fund'.

Maybe in my next life I'll be a heart surgeon or a urologist, they always seem to have more money for guns than me ;)

Just out of curiosity, what county did you get your permit from, Skunk? My sister and brother-in-law live down in Glendora, ever since they had their baby, he's been eager to get a CCW.

To answer the PM's on moleskin: No I was not being 'cute'.

In Uniform , Sam Browne gear squeaks , leather squeaks sometimes, just like leather shoes do. When broken in they don't.

So we have an undercover detail...well the new leather holster squeaks. He is not wearing anything tactical,or Sam Browne, because drug dealers are smart. I put moleskin inside the fastener of IWB for his 1911. I also put moleskin in same spot on IWB mag pouch, and stick onto leather between pouch/holster and jeans. No squeak, druggies busted, life is good.

Shotguns: build up comb. 870's don't fit till I build up comb.

Heel: one forgets to wear silk,or polyproalene socks, next to skin, and gets a blister from sweaty feet results--rubbing. If blister is popped, apply creme, meds (whatever) and bandage. Moleskin over the bandage will get you back in. ( put on another pair of socks at least)

moleskin is also a temp fix on slits on holsters too big for belt.

Dr. Scholl's, foot care dept. It has a peel away to stick, cut to fit. Belongs in first aid and range bag.
---

I agree with holster makers 100%
All I noticed with baby powder, it does work, but don't think its good for leather, and being fine...always bugged me getting into guns's works.

Orange County. Glendora is in LA, I think, so they're SOL :(

Yup, they're hosed on LA county, but they were looking at a place in Tustin, which I believe is Orange County?

I'm still trying to get them up here to a free state, but the market's not cooperating.

His recommendation is to use clear wax shoe polish on the holster periodically. Never, never, never use a liquid on a holster. Good shooting;)
