the tv show jericho(and hurricanes) got me thinking maybe i should read up on this. im going to the gun and knife show this weekend and they have books. any recommendations? im interested in surviving disasters and also being lost in the woods while hunting. i carry a survival pack and watch survivor man on discovery but there is no harm in learning more.

for disasters in south louisiana i have:

2,000 rounds of 7.62x39mm for my ak47 and sks. 500 rounds of 8mm for my mauser. about 500 rounds for my 45acp and 9mm. 200 12 gauge shells. and 3,000 .22 rounds for my 10/22(i figure this could put lots of squirrels, rabbits, birds in the pot).

i have 4 cases of mre. i keep the pantry stocked with extra rice and canned goods. and lots of salt. i would say i have a month's supply of food in my house. i would use it sparingly and start hunting and fishing for daily meals right away.

i have 2 chainsaws, an axe and unlimited supply of wood growing all around me. but i have 20 gallons of butane for cooking in case we flood and have to get in the boat for a while.

boiling water will make it safe to drink and i have a bunch of water purification tablets. i have a hand crank flashlight, radio, cell phone recharger. i have an israel gas mask and 3 filters. with all these chemical plants around baton rouge i need a chemical suit.

as for war, well everyone around here has guns and there are quite a few with ak47s and ar15s but i see no kind of organization except my friend was in the marines long ago.

what else?

It seems like you have enough "things", i would get training. Medical would be great and advanced medical for the "wild"
A great book would be Medicine for Mountaineering. And takeing a first responder class or emt dont have to take the national test just learn stuff.

Do you know CPR the latest one, 30 and 2. Do you know how to tell a capillary from a vein from an artery. How to stop bleeding the right way in what order, direct pressure, holding above heart, pressure point. If a wound bleeds through do you put on another one or take off the old one. How to tell if you or someone is going in shock, what is shock, and which shock is it, how do you treat it. How about heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps. How do you treat each and how do they happen. What about the cold and frost bite. How do you stay warm. In a hot place with no shade, should you lie down or sit on a blanket? How do you lose heat?? How do you get "clean" water with out filters. How do you deal with poeple that are hurt. Splinting? Set a broken bone, traction, passive traction. Drugs, how to conteract, when to induce vomiting when not to. How do you treat a heart attack, with asprin, what about a stroke do you use asprin? Give birth, child? after birth? how to talk to a 1-2 year old, child and teen. How to cool someone down fast with only 3 cold packs.

You should know all these things if you want to stay alive. Sure you can live a bit with out it, but if your on your own for a long time you might need to know this stuff. Plus if your in a group, i would bet your safer with you being the only "doctor".

Get training not things thats what matters in the long run. Its what you know not what you have.
