What makes them so special? I see them advertised, and have seen posters on here speak of them with respect. Whats the deal?

Magpul followers will not ever tilt in a magazine.

Easy.

Two bucks plus ninety seconds to upgrade from a standard follower to a nearly flawless one. What's not to appreciate?

I bought the orange ones. ;)

From a functional standpoint, the weak points of any semi-automatic are the environment, magazines, and ammunition. One of the goals of the H&K High Reliability Magazine was to double the Mean Rounds Between Stoppage (MRBS) by changing the spring, body and follower.

Magpul introduced their follower as an attempt to reduce MRBS by 80% with just a follower change. They have run tests that suggest that type of improvement; but because the studies were done by Magpul and are not peer-reviewed, they tend not to mention them in marketing info.

I can say that I took six of my black follower magazines that I had set aside because of repeated failures. I replaced the followers with Gen I. Magpul followers and SAW Heavy-Duty magazine springs. Those mags are now among my most reliable magazines, even though one of them has a sizeable dent in the mag body.

Based on my limited experience, I feel they offer an advantage over the older green and black followers. So if I have problems with a magazine, I upgrade to a Magpul follower. Also, since I can buy new magazines with the Magpul follower installed for the same price as a USGI magazine, I do. I don't replace any old followers that are still working well though.

They just work.
The weak point of the AR system is the magazines (double feeds, no feeds, etc)
It never happens with magpul followers
i've replaced my entire collection, I've never had a mag issue/jam with the magpuls. As Bartholomew Roberts states, they just work.
Take your worst mag, the one that always jams. invest $2.15 in a new follower. Flip the base, remove it replace it and see if it runs again.
I'll bet it will.
Best cheapest upgrade ever.

Highly recommended. I prefer grey as I am just not tactical enough for coyote brown.:)

What is the difference between the colors? Anything, or is it just cosmetics?

Coyote brown=super tactical operators who operate in danger zones such as malls.

Gray=yuppie scum who drink lattes on their way to gun class.

Orange, pink, inter alia=well, you have to ask our fellower THRer, nite.:D

The colors also signify the generations (usually):

Hot pink/Coyote/Glow in the dark = First generation Magpul follower
Orange/Grey = Second generation Magpul follower
Flat Dark Earth (slightly browner coyote) = Special run of second generation follower for D&H magazines.

The first generation is what I run and it is a noticeable improvement over the green USGI follower. However, it has more follower contact with the side of the magazine, which means it is less amenable to having a lot of crud inside the mag body. The other point is that it doesn't tilt at all, which can affect the leverage on the first round in the magazine when manually loading a round. I also have a bunch of second generation followers in new mags; but haven't given them a thorough shakedown yet.

The second generation follower redesigned the back of the follower to address the leverage issue and reduced the contact on the sides of the follower for those who don't clean their mags. Having said that, I routinely stick my mags down into the dirt/mud to use them as a monopod and I never clean them and I've yet to run into any problems with the 1st generation followers.

I just ordered some C-Products mags with magpul followers. I'll have to see how good they are. They were only about $12 each. A little cheaper in bulk.

I have a bunch of D&H mags. I might have to pick some followers and springs for spares.
