I know that if you were to get a Saiga AK and wanted to convert it into a "military style" rifle, you'd have to play the 922r parts game.

But what about parts kits? Say you have an ak parts kit and you buy a US made receiver and put the rifle together, is that it? Or do you still have to abide by 922r?

You are supposed to abide by 922(r). The receiver is just 1 US made part. Swap out the trigger group and that gets you 3 more. New gas piston is another one and so is a US muzzle brake.

That should be enough parts to get you legal.*

Now, if you file a FORM 1 to make a SBR, then the approved rifle would be exempt from 922(r) - for example, if you want to make a M92 Yugo and want to keep the short barrel.

etc.

*YMMV, check federal and local laws, not responsible for yada yada.
