I found this Model 17-3 in a pawn shop for $199. That is unusual.

FWIW: I just paid $400 for an 80's vintage LNIB 4" 17. It joins my pre 18 5 screw and pre 17 4 screw. The only "deal" I got was the pre 18 which I paid $180 for a couple years ago. S&W .22's command a premium price, because they are in demand. A model 17 was my first handgun purchase 38 years ago.

Model 17's are a hot item, and finding one in truely mint condition is unusual. The asking price is a bit high ($500.00) but a cash offer might bring that down a bit. Also is it a model 17, or a model 17- (something)? Swing out the cylinder and look at the frame under the barrel to see. If there is a dash-number the lower the better is the general rule with these guns. One thing I'm sure of - the prices are not going to go down. Colt, Smith & Wesson and Dan Wesson were the only companies that made blued-steel, target grade .22 revolvers. Now there are none.

Yep: As always Old Fuff is on the mark. I had a .22 Diamondback but I sold it for about $200 more than I paid for it. The Colt grips don't stand up (IMO). Along with the Smith's I've got a DW with a 6" full lug and 4" half lug barrel and three grips. The DA pull on the DW is not great but SA matches accuracy of any of my .22's except my 41. My personal preference is half lug in 6" barrel's.

I have 2 model 17's, a -2 and a -4 and like them better than my Diamondback, which is high praise indeed. I paid between 300 and 400 bucks for each of them and they're worth every nickle.
As the Old Fuff pointed out, they aint gettin any cheaper either

Ah well, I went back to see it again and give it a thorough inspection and it hadn't taken it back to the show.
He had an other one but it wasn't in as good a shape, holster wear and such, but still wanted $475 for it.
Going to go around to the local pawnshops tommorow to see if i can find a cheap one.
