Hey guys, im new to blackpowers but want to get into it for hunting. I like the idea of a pistol but am concerned that its not powerful enough to easily and cleanly take a deer. What are some of your experiances/opinions? And i am also looking for a good place online to shop for a blackpowder gun. Anyplace have a great selection and price? Thanks fellas.

Great place to start learning is the Black Powder section at Cabela's website (www.cabelas.com) ! Good pictures and a lot of information there in one place.

Deer can certainly be taken with a black powder pistol under the right circumstances but "under the right circumstances" they can probably be killed with a croquet mallet too. Personally, I'd say put the deer hunting with a BP pistol on the backburner for a goodly while and consider deer-hunting a rifle-only matter unless you are an excellent deer hunter and are already very, very good with a pistol.

Ditto on what Shawnee said. If you can get your deer well within 50 yards and you're an excellent shot at that distance, there are some black powder pistols that will cleanly harvest a deer, but it takes a lot of patience and self restraint to stay well within your limits.

I have taken deer with my Traditions Buckhunter pistol. You can load a much stouter load than with a revolver, plus it is drilled and tapped for a scope.

How accurate are those Buckhunters? I've been looking at them myself. They remind me of the old Thompson Scout that is no longer made. I'm more interested in the target shooting aspect if they're accurate, but they'd make a good hunting gun too. The Lyman pistol can be safely loaded with pretty hot loads too. I think over the years they have lowered the maximum recommended load, but a lot of folks still use them with 60 grain loads without any problems.

I have hunted deer and hog for the past 10 years with Black powder in Va., Tn., NC., Ga., and Fla. I use a Knight in-line 50 cal. and carry a Dragoon 44cal. on my side as a back up and have taken deer with the pistol at 40 yrds. the thing you have to remember is the charge is the key -- you have to use at lest a 50grn. load so make sure your pistol will handle it -- if you can take a deer with a bow then you should have no problem with the right pistol

Mine was a cheaper substitute for a contender, plus I like the exposed hammer. I have a scope on it and I have shot 1 1/2 inches at fifty yards.
