Got a new toy today

I went to Kmart this afternoon. I know they are supposed to be allowed to die with no gunowners giving them business but don't judge yet. I went planning to just look but I saw a deal too good to pass up.

Apparently they are moving guns out of all Kmarts close to urban areas (:cuss: in principle, but it lead to a great situation). So many of the rifles are starting to be marked down to prices that have to be lower than cost. Based on the price I figured they have to be losing money on it to just get it out so I decided that any help I was giving them by buying was more than made up for by the savings (hey, why not help them lose money).

I got a Savage 110 in 30-06 with iron sights (no scope package, but the scope coming with those is pretty cheap anyway). It isn't quite what I had in mind for my first centerfire bolt rifle (I wanted a Howa in .308 with a decent scope) but the price was irresistable. I got it for $179!!! At that price I can get a decent inexpensive scope and rings and still be well under the usual package price (heck, it isn't much more than a good mil surplus).

I'd love to get it to the range soon, but it is raining here and is supposed to throughout the holiday weekend:mad: . Oh well, maybe I'll get to try it out next week.

For that price, I'd gladly give the evil KMart corporation my money to contribute to the RKBA. I have feeling I'm going to be around longer than they will so in a way, it's an investement in our future. ;)

WOW!!! What a smokin' deal! I bought my .30-06 from K-mart back in 1978 when that corporation wasn't run by pandering, overly-urbanized idiots.
I've still got it and it's working fine. Congrats on your purchase!

Hmm. I might need to check and see if there's any KMart's alive in my area.

I bought a 110 package a few years ago.
Took the Simmons scope off and put a Nikon Buckmaster on it.
Had the trigger lightened.
At 80yds can put four shots under a nickle.
Great rifle at any price.
Good job on finding such a deal.

Congrats on the great deal. May I ask what Kmart you picked it up at and if there were any other good deals still there?

Congrats on the great deal. May I ask what Kmart you picked it up at and if there were any other good deals still there? RT. 40 in Ellicott City. There weren't any this good but there were a few good ones. A 110 Combo package (w/ scope) in .270 for $300, a Remington 7400 with wood furniture for about $370 or $380, a Mossberg 500 (I forget the barrel length) for $200, and maybe a few others. The guy there did say that they were putting things on clearance prices one or two at a time to move them out so in a few weeks or even a few days there may be some other raging deals.

Hate to rain on your parade, but I'd have still bought it from my local gun shop than from Lame-Mart even if I spent twice the price. I know my local shop will take care of me and cares about my owning that firearm in the future.

All the K-marts in my town are closed except one. Haha! I never liked that store anyway.

Hate to rain on your parade, but I'd have still bought it from my local gun shop than from Lame-Mart even if I spent twice the price. I know my local shop will take care of me and cares about my owning that firearm in the future. I do understand but I'm not really in a financial situation where I am willing to do that right now. To buy this exact same gun at a sporting goods chain (Bass Pro Shops for instance) or another discount department store (like Walmart) would have cost at least $200 more (and probably closer to $250) and the combo with the scope would be $250-300 more. At a local gun shop it would have certainly been well over $400 for this gun.

The gun I really wanted to buy (the Howa) in the configuration I wanted would have been $300-350 more (around $500).

My current finances don't allow me the luxury to spend $200-300 more on an identical item and $300-350 for something similar if I don't have to. I am 32 and I am living with my parents at the moment so I can afford to be a subsitute teacher (the highest paying available job that would give me experience that would help me get into graduate school in the field I wish to get into) and still save a little for application fees, interview fees (travel and motel), etc. to get into graduate school and moving expenses once I get in. Right now I am trying to get some holes in my "collection" filled before I leave (once in grad school I probably won't be able to afford much more than one gun a year) and a bolt rifle just happened to be one of those holes. If not for this deal this might have been one of the holes that I will leave unfilled.

Anyway, as I said in the original posting, I tend not to patronize K-mart myself. I went just to look for comparison sake. When I saw this deal it was too good to pass up. At that price ($179) it must be below cost and I really don't see anything wrong with helping them lose money.

Nice buy, chaim. Not all gunshops strive to be the epitome of altruism. Nothing wrong with buying at below cost of goods sold. :)

I'm glad you bought the gun, and I'm absolutely certain your local shop is glad as well. They'd undoubtedly rather sell you the ammo, scope and other goodies to go with a gun bought elsewhere than nothing at all.

Hope you enjoy it. 30-06 is a great cartridge and Savage makes a good gun, regardless of price.
