I've recently acquired a Mak that I'm going to start using as a carry gun. I can find ammo for it a gun shops, but the price is very high.

I stopped by the local Gander Mountain and they don't carry 9x18.

Does anyone know if any of the big chains carry 9x18 or should I just stick with online and gun shows?

Also, I would really appreciate suggestions on brands for both the range and self defense. Would also prefer clean ammo (non-corrosive) as I tend not to clean guns after each firing.

Thanks!

Outdoor Marksman has Hornady XTP JHPs for sale. They are generally considered top tier for domestic 9x18, although they are slightly downloaded in velocity compared to foreign production.

All new production, including eastern block, is non-corrosive. I haven't seen any milsurp 9x18 in ages. All of the 92-95 grain FMJs (Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Barnaul, LVE, Wolf..etc.) should function fine in your gun. Online buying in bulk is the most cost effective.

Personally, I'm currently using 120g Silver Bear for my Bulgarian Makarov and 95g FMJ Barnaul for my non-Mak 9x18mm guns. The only round that has ever caused my Bulgy to choke was the old Wolf 109g conical nose FMJ.

Almost every place I look for bulk online is out of stock. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Silver Bear seems to be in. Both AIM and Ammunitionstore have it.

Some people have reported problems with squibs with the old 120g JHP Silver Bear. I haven't had any problems, and I still use it (with due caution, like any ammo). It's on par with other Eastern European producers to me.

Howdy! I know it's a bit pricey, but I swear by Sellier and Bellot. It's new production and is, in fact, the manufacturer of Winchester's 9 x 18. My CZ 83 loves it!!

Another source you might check is www.sportsmansguide.com my most recent catalog listed several milsurp loadings in 9 x 18.

You can also buy them at gun shows at good prices if you're patient enough for the next one in your area. I usually buy a couple of boxes of Sellier & Bellot at regular retail prices just so I have some. Then, I stock up when the next gun show comes to town. They usually have good prices and the seller will sometimes even lower the price if you buy a lot.

what TripleL said. Go to a gun show, buy a couple thousand rounds of Silver Bear.
