I got a face full of brass today...

I was breaking in a new Kimber 1911 Pro CDP II today. Shooting S&B 230g FMJs...
The gun did good overall, but about 10 % of the brass was ejected straight back, and kept pinging me right between the eyes...
After a while, this sort of got irritating.
I didnt have any other ammo to try today.
Is this problem most likely related to the ammo, or the gun?

Quit shooting from the hip.
Well, if you are shooting with a normal stance, it could be that the extractor needs tuned. Might be the ejector too, but look at the extractor first. JMHO

No hip shooting was involved.

:D
Resisting the urge to go on for two paragraghs regarding flesh wounds and pain medication, I jump forward to this thought.
I have never bought a 1911 ( my experience is somewhat limited) that had an extractor properly tuned. If the extractor does not exert the proper tension on the brass, the ejector cannot do it's job at the right time.

Check out this link, go down to "Extractor Tuning and Installation Tips (By Bill Wilson)".
You may find that you need to tweak your extractor. A place to start.

Safety tip.. wear shooting glasses. I had a nickel cased (edited) piece of brass hit a barrier in front of me and to my right and bounce back with enough force to break the skin between my eyes. Bled a lot.
Scared other folks at the range.
Sounds like you need to tune your extractor.

Hit between the eyes with a bullet? Ouchie! :what: (I think you mean nickel case hit you)
The extractor is the usual fix. Could be the hook angle, the hook length, or a chipped hook though even if it is not too loose of a grip on the rim. I do recall hearing about a gun on which the ejector was broken off. The gun was still ejecting the brass but straight back. If it isn't either of those they do make longer ejectors.

Nope...since he specified 230 gr., I believe he means the bullet.
Not terribly uncommon. I had a LRN hit me almost perfectly base first in the thigh once. I know because it made a perfect little red circle.

Thumper, read the post, he said the brass was hitting him.

Let me clarify...
I was shooting Sellier and Bellot 45 ACP 230g FMJ's. That the cartridge.
The bullets were going out of the end of the barrel and hitting the target, you know, like normal.
The brass cases were ejecting to the right 90% of the time, as normal.
About 10 % of the time, the brass cases ejected straight back, and bounced off my forehead. I wasnt being struck by bullets.
I was wearing safety glasses, by the way.

Thumper was probably responding to Dr.Rob's post a couple above his where he did get hit with the bullet.
Brass or bullet it is a good idea not to get hit with either. Glasses and a hat are required anytime myself or the kids hit the range.

I bought a compact Llama Minimax .45ACP a few years ago and experienced the same problem. I was getting beaned on top of the head with empty brass about every third round and occassionally one would come straight back and get me in the forehead. The gun is equipped with an outside extractor. However after about 500 rounds it settled down and started ejecting consistently to the right, and accuracy improved.
I think what you are experiencing are quirks that will go away as the gun is broken in and settles down. Shoot 500 or so rounds through it, if it dosen't improve, take it to your pet gunsmith and see if he can tweek it. If things don't improve then, well.........ya might consider unloading it. In the meantime wear a hat and safety glasses.:what:

Another tip, wear a baseball cap. Years ago, during an IPSC match, I had a 45 ACP case bounce off of a barricade, hit my head and rolled down under my glasses and came to rest on my cheek. Let me tell you it was some kind of hot! Started wearing baseball caps after that little incident.

As have I, with the very same pistol.
I've come to the conclusion that if you had only been using JHPs instead.... :D Just kidding
I'll vote for the extractor as well, since that's what I was told by several others I trust after experiencing the same thing. I believe it has absolutely zilch to do with the ammunition you're using.

Extractor.
I "tuned" the extractor in my Kimber more than once, and re-contoured the ejector face, before junking the OEM part and installing a Wilson Bulletproof extractor. End of brass-face.
My impending Colt will get a spring steel extractor from Cylinder and Slide. Mmmm...spring steel....

Sorry, I meant BRASS (there wasn't a need to specify the load), though I have been hit with a piece of ricocheting lead with enough force to get a bruise (Indoor range).

As brass in the face.
Maybe change the Recoil spring for a stronger one?
When I saw the title to the thread I figured you had to be shooting a SIG.
I would sell the gun if it can't be fixed. A ball cap helps too.
I was shooting a SIG a while back and I swear that if I had glued a dixie cup on the bill of a ball cap it would have put 75% of the spent cases right in there. That's german precision for you.
Good Luck
