Anybody make a modern J Frame sized 9mm wheelgun? I've never heard of one.

I am not sure.

Perhaps it has something to do with the rim's on the end of the cartridge? most 9mm's are flush, whereas on something like a .357, there's a lip.

I have seen 9mm snubbies in Smith and Wesson Ruger and Taraus at different times in the past not sure if any are currently produced.

My Dad had a Ruger Blackhawk convertible, with a 9mm cylinder, and there are a few .45 ACP revolvers now, I believe. The trick is usually the use of moon clips, and I think some chambers are a bit tapered, so the round is supported by the chamber walls.
I'm no expert, but this is what I've gathered over the years, not having personally owned a revolver chambered for an auto cartridge.

I have a Taraus 905 in 9mm. I really like it. But I think they dropped it from their line. Crimson Trace recently came out with a rubber overmold grip for it and I plan to pick one up soon. It is a little shorter than the Hogue I have on it and will work better for concealment, especially pocket carry.

I would love to see Taurus bring back the 9mm snubby. Right now 9mm is about half the price of .38 Special. I can only shoot my stainless S&W Chief's Special every once in a while.

I think Taurus is the only manufacturer producing a NIB 9mm revolver in the 905, check out the link...

I got kind of excited when I saw a hammerless version of the 905 at the above link, then I noticed the words "discontinued" at the bottom left corner of the screen when I clicked on the 905CHSS.

Oh well, you could always get the hammer bobbed for pocket carry.

Taurus, like others before them, discontinued the 9mm revolver as they all had problems with the moon clips. Maybe someday someone will get it right.

Find a used S&W 940. Good guns a little finicky on the ammo they like though. Mine won't shoot some brands without binding up but it shoots most well. Here is a photo of mine.

None are currently being produced, but here's a list of past production 9mm revos - they're fun guns and underappreciated, IMO. The most commonly available on various auction sites are the Taurus and S&W's.

That picture hurts Firebreather01. I've been dying for a Speed-Six in 9mm for years now and just can't lay my hands on one. I was lucky enough to get an SP-101 which is wonderful in its own right though so I do have at least one. Now we know where the rest of them are. :D

As said above, I do believe Taurus is still making one. The great thing about the 9mm revolver is that it shoots better rounds than a 38 and it has a much shorter cylinder, and therefore a smaller lighter gun. It is THE caliber for a "pocket" snubbie IMHO. I friend of mine has one of the Ruger 9mm snubbies that I have been drooling over for years.

RollTide, you are on the money. The newest catalogue I got Friday from Taurus lists their models 905B2 (blued) and 905SS2 (matte stainless). Both have rubber grips and a 2" barrel. Both are fixed sights and 5 shot. Both are 21 ounces dry. The MSRP on the blued one is listed as $398. and the price shown for the stainless one is $447. They also list their "Stellar" clips for $6. for a five pack. I can't tell from the photo but the clips look like those plastic ones that turned up for Smiths a while back.

I hate having to eat my words, but Taurus was glad to help me. Firebreather was correct in that NONE are currently produced. I went to the web page for them and the blue and stainless 9mms are both listed as discontinued. I have a 450 .45Colt Titanium which is discon'ed and it isn't in the new catalogue. Go figure.

What makes the 9mm more powerful? Is it just that the round is a larger diameter?

The 38 is a much longer case, in which more powder could be loaded.

I've always wondered why the 9mm was had better ballistics, I just never asked.

38 special is a old cartrige that is loaded to lower pressures than 9mm.

Actually, the round is .002" smaller. The .38 Special can be loaded to modern 9mm performance but in many factory loads it is slightly below. The difference in performance isn't that great. The discussion here is the advantage of the shorter round(and cylinder) for carry. The 9mm Luger round is also typically cheaper for those that only shoot commercial.

IMO:
Commonly 9mm is fired in a semi-auto where there is no barrel/ cylinder gap to lose gas. The .38 Spls, if you go to 147 gr subsonics are equally as good as the 9mm. Likewise the size of the projectile is not an issue. The .38spl and .357mag rounds use a bullet with a .357" diameter and the 9mm uses one which has a diameter of .355"

How do the 940s shoot compared to a 442/642 with +P ammo (specifically wonder about the recoil)
