The Libertarian cartoon, Day by Day, has had a run of gun/shooting oriented prints the past week or so. You can peruse the storyline using the calendar on the main page.
A good, topical cartoon, even when it's not about guns.

I used to be cool and hip and then I got a mortgage, a payroll to meet, overhead and responsibilities. What the heck was that? I don't understand anything in that "cartoon".
Aren't they to have punchlines? Back in my day when I walked uphill to school barefoot in the snow both ways, cartoons had punchlines and we liked it.:banghead:

Certainly some days are better than others. I imagine it's tough to come up with something new and funny every day. Still worth the 30 seconds a day in my opinion.

DBD is not much different than Doonesbury, for example - more of a way to make a wry statement than to elicit an outright guffaw.

Too many exposed midriffs for me to take seriously.
He's trying to present frearms in a no-nonsense manner,
but he draws all his girls like they're from an A&F catalog.
Might swing some metropolitan fencesitters, but it's too chic for me.

I like the comic, myself, and the people in it are familiar to me...sorts I hang out with. SUCCESSFUL people of my age group, who follow fashion trends, and are conservative because they don't want the government taking away their money to give to people who didn't try as hard. People who fought their way through school into a lucrative career in marketing, creative design, whatever, and enjoy their success.
The cartoonist is rightly showing that not all young professionals are leftist twits, many are conservatives, and that not all conservatives are frumpy old-before-their-time sorts who dress sensibly and go to bed at 9pm before the age of 35.
I like it. I've followed the comic for some time. For anyone who works in a hip, urban-setting office and is successful, but likes guns and resents the government sucking out of their wallet to give to deliberate failures, it speaks their language.
And as another poster said, it's not a "ha ha funny joke" old-fashioned comic strip. It's meant to be wry social commentary.

I never understood the appeal of DBD. It is not funny, wise or profound, unlike Doonesbury. In most cases there is no point to the strip. Must be very popular with the chic, urban metrosexual crowd who like pointless entertainment.

Yes, csbyte, and one overwhelming attribute of the "chic, urban metrosexual crowd" is that they tend to be financially successful professionals in life, who took the time and effort to learn the skills of a lucrative career, and enjoy the fruits of their success.
Now, they can either vote conservative, so as to keep their own money and not have the government tell them what to do, they can find guns to be a pleasurable hobby and a wise form of self-defense, or they can be alienated by statements like yours, discount all conservatives and 2A advocates as 'bubbas', and vote elsewhere.
Very helpful.

People are smart enough to know that conservatives are not about keeping our money from wasteful feel good spending, nor are they protectors of our rights. I bet the people you are talking about already know this and vote accordingly. Gun owners already swing fence sitters to the other side with their irrational hatred for anyone that does not subscribe to their point of view. Every notice that on this web site.

I think you're mistaking neocons, who got their posteriors handed to them, for actual academic Goldwater conservatives, who ARE about all of that.
Most people I know are of the latter sort. They're disgusted by the mishandling of the war and drunken-sailor spending and simply lousy management over the past few years, but they're also for keeping government small and out of their pockets. They're for slashing entitlement programs and ending the Section 8 plague that's ruined many a starting-to-gentrify uplifting neighborhood, sending it crashing from the first few upscale bistros and galleries for the successful, right back to freefire crackdens. They're also for criminal control, not gun control...wanting to severely punish repeat offenders, not coddle them, not try to understand them, just slap them with harsher punishments, no amentities, down to bare cells with a clean foam pad and bland, nutritious soy gruel...until they learn how to behave like human beings, and if they can't, keep them locked up and away from civilization.
They're REAL conservatives in the fiscal and academic sense.

Neocons and Conservatives have more in common than you expect. The conservative that you speak of don't exist. They never did and never will. Conservative of all stripes are for increasing goverment spending, enlarging the goverment and the military. They want interntional trade pacts that hurt honest American workers. And the icing on the cake they want open borders.

I love Day by Day. And I'm with Kaylee and Henry Bowman. :D There are so few positive portrayals of firearms in the media, I'll take them wherever I can get them, even if it's in the comics. (They'll even slip the anti-gun agitprop in there (http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComic.mpl?date=2006/11/4&week=1&name=Cleats), too!) As far as Doonesbury goes, quite possibly the best smackdown on Mr. Trudeau and his god-awful creation can be found here (http://beautifulatrocities.com/archives/2004/08/night_of_the_li_1.html).

I just discovered this strip from a link from this thread.
I like it, it seems to handle the topic of firearms with an even hand.
It's only a small piece, but its neither completely pro-gun or anti-gun, more like:
"There's likely some problems here, but let's not get nuts."

Maybe it's enough that a work can use firearms and their attached baggage for lighthearted humor instead of getting into the gritty politics itself.
Y'know "here's the guns, here's two perspectives, it's kinda crazy" but while keeping frothing hardlining at bay and next week the kids are playing football.
Instead of, "This week in Cleats, the shocking gun storyline that you can't afford to miss."
One thing's for certain, we gunnies take our cartoon strips {} seriously.
So much simpler when it was just dogs flyin' around on their red houses.

Day by Day is usually pretty funny, but sometimes it takes a few days to get to the punchline, which is just fine by me. With the advent of online comic strips, the medium has gone in all sorts of new directions that artists were never able to explore within the confines dictated by newspapers and comic syndicates.
And Doonesbury hasn't been funny for about the last decade and a half. Trudeau's edge has blunted with age and anger.

I like that comic and always have. It shows a sharp wit and attention to the current political scene. The characters are attractive, intelligent, and hip. This makes them role models for young upcoming politically active people. The exact kind of people we need supporting our Second Amendment to keep it live for the future. If you are the old curmudgeonly gunny sort don't lock these folks out because they show belly and cleavage...we want everybody to support the right to keep and bear arms remember?

On an even lighter note, does Trudeau even draw his strip anymore? I had been told the whole thing was done by inkers.
One of the things I like most about Chris Muir's strip is that, being based on the Internet, he can address current issues in a far more timely fashion than the print strips. He can also change his punchlines, which it what makes if fun to check out the strip in the evening, and then the following morning.

Not that Muir needs any help...but anyone got a good idea for a story line? He might actually read your suggestions here.
I can't wait to see how the SIG calendar photoshoot is going to work out. I think the SIG guy has already got the hots for our heroine.
1. Damon buys a K31 and uses the tag under the buttplate to contact the Swiss army guy who owned it. The retired Swiss guy invites the crew to Switzerland and is quite taken with the girls.
2. Jan and Damon get SWAT-teamed in a raid at the wrong address.
3. Skye joins the Marines.
4. Anything involving a Garand.
Blackfork
November 27, 2006, 01:05 PM
4a. Damon and Zed receive CMP Garands they have ordered. Sam is SERIOUSLY pissed off that they didn't think to include her. The SIG guy gets her a sweet deal on a Inland Folding stock M1 Carbine that she posed with in the calendar. Jan can't figure out what all the fuss is about these old greasy guns.

I somehow don't see the strip characters as being involved in antique rifle collecting. :scrutiny: That'd be...some other comic, different lifestyle. Especially if it's meant to be urban...you simply cannot do such things if you live in an apartment. Nothing that requires grease and cleaning!
SIGs and HKs and whatever the most stylish black rifle du jour is, perhaps. Things that could lie on a desk with a Blackberry and a flatpanel display and not look out of place.

November 27, 2006, 01:31 PM
I disagree. I think Damon and Zed would be STOKED to get some CMP Garands. They seem to be renaissance guys. And Sam? You know she wants one for SURE.

Hey Chris, welcome to THR.
I'm a regular reader of the strip. While I'll admit the T&A seems a little gratuitous sometimes, it doesn't really bother me. Being, you know... male and stuff.
My only pet peeve is with your site - not with the strip. You know how you have the DBD logo set up so it plays sort of a theme song when you mouse over it? That's a nifty effect, but at 2AM when I've forgotten to turn my speakers down it can be pretty jarring when I accidentally mouse over that when I'm trying to hit the 'previous' link.
Oh, and if Sam does a SIGARMS calendar shoot, any chance of getting Jan in one with Springfield? I'd love to see her with an XD.

Scott Adams, (Dilbert) says the key to getting a strip to ignite is not to have EVERYONE like it, but to have a fanatical following. He said he knew Dilbert was going to take off when people began cutting out the daily strips and making their own Dilbert books. Other people thought it was OK. Some didn't get it at all, but the fanatics pushed it over the top.

Nice use of color. Well drawn. Characters have good depth. Some of the by play goes over my head but living in the wilderness and my advancing years keep me out of the modern age. Luckily, I have 17 year old twins that slowly explain stuff to me.

OK. So I'm over 35 and I take a nap around 9PM. It's just a nap I tell you.....:neener:
Thanks for this thread. I had not known about DBD before. Now it's on my favorites for daily perusal along with my Lawdog fix.
Welcome to THR, Chris.
El T, are you saying you have cartoons in color? What is color?
Chris Muir

Only at 9PM? I hit it at 4-5.50pm.
After an Act of God, I get up and work the rest of the evening

Is the defenition of old age "gray matter migrates from inside of the skull to the outside"?

Doonesbury is horribly lame. Gary Trudeau has apparently not been informed that Vietnam is over and Nixon is no longer in the whitehouse. It's been lame, out-of-date, and outright dishonest as far back as I can remember. At least since '86 or so.
If you enjoy regurgitated leftist tripe, then I can see how Doonesbury might be enjoyable.

I didn't know about DBD either. I like it too. Hope it will be compiled into books sometime.

Many thanks, LordGibson!
With Handgun Midas telling me the remarkable Mr. Muir draws some of his characters as if they were from A&F; well, right there, it was worth a few seconds to investigate!
Delightful, Chris! Count me as another fan! :D
(Bodyconscious women who pack heat and are well-spoken always catch my attention!)

I gave up reading cartoons when The Far Side went away. I guess I'm just too far down the evolutionary ladder to "get" some of the new stuff.:p

That's similar to the image for a web page link that Oleg has on his FAQ page.

Ayoob, Muir, Oleg and now Yoda. All in the same thread! This needs to be archived in platinum and saved for future generations. :D
I don't get to peruse DBD as often as I would like, but I try to catch up about once a week.

Calendar and/or wallpaper downloads early January 2007.
There will be a notice on DBD about it late this month...
No DBD books at this time, I'm afraid.

The "eye" comment was based on someone asking if a "soft focus close-up of Sam's eye" be present.. I think perhaps in the comments section of Tam's blog. Anyhow, I reckon it's become an Olegian trademark.

Chris, remember that when it comes to the weddings of your characters, you've got a gun-totin' Preacherman available! :D

Of all the photo shoots I've helped Oleg conduct, this one was by the far, the most fun.
Sam is very beautiful. I don't think there's a flaw on her body.
