Winchester. You'll definately find it at gun shows. The Remington is a pain to find, but supposedly still in production.
www.ammoman.com had some old-stock Federal (and no, not "nyclad", plain lead!) just recently, might still be there.

Win. # X38SPD ( 158 gr. LSWC HP +P)
Gray Area Ammo : WESHOOT2@aol.com, for your "not off the rack" needs...;)

Cheaper than Winchester, and faster.

CheaperThanDirt [ http://www.cheaperthandirt.com ] has both:
Remington R38S12 $19.08 / 50
Winchester X38SPD $19.58 / 50
As does Natchez [ http://www.natchezss.com ]:
Remington FTR38S12 $17.03 / 50
Winchester WNX38SPD $17.98 / 50
Federal stopped making virtually its entire line of its all-lead handgun loads sometime last year, citing a lack of demand.

I find it almost impossible to find locally and rarely see it at gun shows. As others have posted it is available from dealers on the web. I get the impression that there is little demand for it because people have gone to autos and/or because law enforcement no longer uses it the knowledge of its effectiveness has been lost except to us old timers and gun nuts. The 125 grain JHP +P seems to be the standard now for the 38 special.

Sometimes you can find it discounted. And if the gunstore clerk says they don't have any, look carefully anyway. I've had a few clerks miss the "+P" part of ".38 Special +P."

Jeez, at the link to Rozedist.com which I gave above; you can buy 1000 LSWCHP +Ps for $120, SHIPPED; and they're accurate and rated at 910 fps. If you send in equivalent brass, you can get that down to just over 80 bucks. Even with your shipping costs for the brass to them, that's well under 5 dollars a box. It's not like the LSWCHP requires some kind of high-tech rocket science; all you need is soft swaged lead and reliability, and I've shot hundreds of them without a single failure of any kind.

Thanks everybody, you folks gave out more than I hoped for.
ChristopherG, I had no idea Zero ammo was still available. It's
the same stuff I started out with some years ago. We used it in
our Glocks and S&W revolvers. Very good ammunition, never a
problem. Well the Glocks are gone but I'm shooting the heck out of my wheels. Thanks all.

Can anyone tell me more about the Roze/Zero company? I never heard of them before this thread.

Look under Reloaded ammo, Monster--same deal, used brass. And again, if you send them equivalent brass, it's still cheaper (though you have to call for the 'exchange' price; it's not on the website)

Glam', they've been supplying reloads for decades. Many PD's here in the South still use 'em. They're located in Cullman, AL, about 60mi north of Birmingham. She's a bit of a strange duck, but they're a quality product.

Are the reloads made using mixed or same headstamp brass?
ChristopherG

Mixed headstamps.

ChristopherG: Do you used the reloaded stuff for carry or just practice?
ChristopherG

I used to carry it; then I got into reloading, and now roll my own. When I did carry it, I was totally comfortable and confident doing so. If the idea of carrying mixed-headstamp, reloaded, inexpensive ammo bothered you, you could just buy a box of their new manufactured stuff for carry and still be able to use the exact same load, in reloads, for practice. Myself, I don't like shooting all that many LSWHPs, cause they're messy & smokey. I usually shot the Roze 158 gr. JHP for practice (a very accurate round in my guns).
