Looks like The Wife might take a job in Richardson soon, and I'm looking seriously at a job at Dallas Children's, so we may be pulling up stakes and moving south. We're going down wednesday or thursday to look around at some of the smaller towns on I-30 and I-75 and was just wondering if anyone knew the area. I doubt I'll be able to find a place like I have now where I can literally shoot out my back window, so I need some sugestions on gun clubs in the area, any outdoor ranges, etc.

Well, in the Richardson/Garland/Plano area, The Bullet Trap at Plano Rd. and Park seems to be the most popular. Lone Star Guns is just across Park. Garland Public on Pleasant Valley just North of the street that GB turnpike ends into (Can't remember the name) is also a nice one. As for shops, I like Ray's Hardware and Sporting Goods on... I think it's Commerce street just past the West end of Woodall Rogers. If you go the rifle route, there's a place just South of Jupiter and Centerville... can't remember the name, but they had a pretty nice selection of hunting rifles last time I went.

We used to live in far south Richardson, right next to the junior college. Also lived in Garland one year. Bought my first centerfire pistol at The Bullet Trap, a Colt 1991A1 that, after some work by Ned Christiansen, is still one of my favorites. When we lived there 1986-1990, North Dallas/Richardson was a great place to live. I went back with the wife a couple years ago and it had gone down a bit. Still, Richardson proper and Plano seemed like a decent place to live.

Interesting story for guitar/music buffs - Pantera used to live in the apartments on the east side of Abrams just north of 635. I met them and an unknown at the time Black Crowes and some british band whose name I can't remember at the moment. Also the guitarist Eric Johnson worked at one of the local guitar shops and I used to hang out and talk with him all the time. He was so amazing even back then. One year at the big guitar show, they were demoing a CD player thing that allowed you to remove two tracks of a specially coded CD. So there was Eric Johnson playing Crush of Love by Joe Satriani.

And for academic types, the first person that ever got a perfect score on the SAT and the ACT went to my high school - Lake Highlands Senior High.

Depends a lot on how much time you are willing to spend in the seat of the car. I stop by to feed my horses and target practice there for a relaxer and head to the house and jump on the boat for a few minutes of fishing, BUT, I am willing to drive 60 miles North East of Dallas.

There is no doubt about it. :(

Dallas is spreading eveyrday and the small towns are disappearing. If you want to live in a small town be ready for a long commute, because there aren't any close. The Dallas metroplex has spreaded all the way to Mckinney.

Right now we're looking at Royce City. Will probably settle about 60 minutes out of Dallas. Right now we're about 2 hours out, not too bad for me only working 3 days a week and all, but too much for The Wife.

I drive through Royse City twice a day.

There is a very nice 300 yard rifle range called outback in Cumby, TX. It is about 40 minutes from Royse City, but worth the drive.

There is another range called Jacob's Plain Gun Club which is closer but not nearly so nice.

There is also the Terrell Rifle & Pistol Club which has ranges up to 200 yards.

You're just around the corner from my favorite gun shop, Accuracy Arms. If you take the FM (548 or 549) that runs north/south through Royse City south to 276 and then take a right on 276 you'll find it about 5 miles down the road on the left.
