Ok looking at shotguns in my near future I think. And its sorta narrowed down to two...mostly on costs alone.

A Remington 870 or a Mossburg 500. Which would I be better off with. Likely not to shoot much skeet as there arent many places I know of to do that here in Nashville. Know of one but dont know and havent been to it ever.

So that in mind, is the extra dollars worth the 870? Or just a flat black mossy with a pistol grip full stocked rear(like the stock and pistol grip better than just pistol grip) with like a 20 inch barrell, heat shield, and 8 round tube.....sounds tempting to me :) Is the 870 worth the money for a basic home defense shotgun and fun at the range gun. Few slugs though it and a few buck shot though it to keep it working right :D

just get whatever, a shotty is a shotty. just get the cheaper of the two it really doesn't matter.

Try looking for an older 870 - police trade-ins are great values. That way you get a more refined shotgun for about the same amount of money.

The new 870s seem to have some QC slippage.

None of the shotguns mentioned are bad shotguns.

I'll just reiterate...

1. All of the guns mentioned will do just fine. Dave McC calls the Remington/Mossberg/Winchester/Ithaca grouping the Big Four, and they exist at the top of the food chain for a reason...their guns work nicely. They operate in different ways, however, so you need to decide which you like. Also, costs will vary a bit.

2. Police trade-in 870s are a beautiful thing. They usually fall into the carried-often, shot little category, and look it. The outsides are dinged and scuffed, the innards are often shiney and new.

3. Remington has apparently not been following the "if it ain't broke..." axiom. They make one of the best shotties out there, and then of late they feel the need to fiddle with the design/parts/manufacturing for PC and $$$ reasons. Another reason to get a police trade-in gun.

The McRule: With all else equal, get the one that FEELS the best.

My choice is the 870. More important than the name on the thing is mindset, practice, form ad expertise.

Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat. BA/UU/R....

Speaking of shotguns for HD- and the NOISE!!!!!
I was thinking that those new Federal Metro or Winchester Feather loads, that is the subsonic loads might be best for HD.

Reload them with an equivalent load of 00B, or Hevi-shot buckshot, or a slug (!) and you have an ounce projectile at abt 950fps- that is quieter than a similar pistol load and still should do the job!

Any thoughts?

Well leaning toward the Mossy. Ive yet to hear too many complaints about a well maintained mossy. Yea the 870 is nicer, but I dont need it for hunting or anything. While Id like to have a M1 or M4....just no need. Ill just live with a cheap mossy. Darrin picked up his 590 today and it did look very good, and appeared to be well put together. Might not be the best out there but it will get the job done.

Plus for sport I may end up with my grandfathers 20 gauge Ithica featherlight pump, I just love that gun. 20 guage isnt all that but still love my grandfathers pride and joy

I'v got the Mossy 500a Persuader with ghost rings for HD and am quite happy with it. If I were planning to do a lot of shot gunning like hunting or target I might have gone to the 870 or 1100 but for me the 500 was just fine. The only thing I did was trim the stock 1/2" shorter for a better fit. Makes a nice fun gun too!

Start with what ever shotgun you find that offers the best deal for price/fit/function. You can always buy more.:)

There's another skeet range here in Nashville. I can't remember the name, I think it's something like 'Nashville Gun Club'. But it's on County Hospital Road, off of Briley Parkway (exit 24).

If you're coming west from I24, as soon as you get off Briley and the exit begins to turn towards the left, look to your right, you'll see a metal gate, that's it. I don't know the hours, but they're posted on the sign IIRC.
