View Full Version : Anyone oil their holsters?

I have an old holster that I keep one of my 1911’s in when I’m around the house that was pretty dried out, so I used Red Wing boot oil on it, and not only did it bring it right back to life, but made it softer, more pliable, and much more comfortable to wear than ever before. I guess if you can oil boots and baseball mitts, why not holsters to keep the leather soft and in good condition? But then I was thinking; could this damage the leather if it doesn’t need it?
Any thoughts from the group on oiling your holster?

Oiling will soften the leather and destroy any fitting that was done to the holster turning it into a soft leather bag. If that's what you want, oil away. Oil will also destroy the stitching eventually.
I destroyed a fine pair of leather boots with waterproofing grease and neatsfoot oil.
Holsters should be treated with paste shoe polish only, usually neutral. I do occasionally use some black paste shoe polish on my black horsehide pocket holster to touch up the high spot that always gets worn down to a brown finish.

Bad idea, as stated it will soften up and lose its shape.
Carnuba wax is what I use instead of oils.

Fighting and concealed carry holsters.........no.
Outdoor utility holsters I oil them very lightly. If you do oil your leather stay away from neatsfoot and the other junk out there.
I use Obenauf's. It doesn't soften or rot the leather or stitching.

Like I said, this is just an old, beater holster that I use around the house that came with my 1911. I was about to trash it as it was old, very dried out and the leather was beginning to crack, so I figured that I had nothing to loose. But I’ll keep the oil off of my good leather. Thanks again.

Obenauf's leather oil will restore that old holster.

LEXAL leather conditioner is what they use in the Baseball Hall Of Fame for old gloves. It works well too.
