Hello Everyone,

I have a rather unusual questions. Members of my family who know I shoot have approached me about getting some ear protection for my elderly grandfather who is adjusting to a retirement home he just moved into. It seems that some members of the home scream in their sleep from time to time and wake my grandfather up since he is a light sleeper.

Since I have used my shooting muffs for drowning out noise so I could sleep I know that the behind the neck style are the most comfortable for this purpose if you toss and turn at all. The traditional over the top of the head style muffs get in the way when laying on your side and other positions.

My old behind the neck muffs are some from Peltor.

Are these the best behind the neck muffs on the market or are there other brands that would prove to be even more quiet?

How about moving your grandfather out of the retirement home?

Used to be that grandmother/father, father/mother and son/daughter all lived under the same roof. That is after grandmother/father are too old to care for themselves, and need the help of father/mother.

You also have grandmother/father end up babysitting son/daughter, and you end up passing on old values and traditions this way since father/mother is usually away at work 10 hours each day to pay for the wonderful big government that we have.

Also, having grandmother/father helps deprogram son/daughter from the 8 hours indoctrination and brainwashing that they get in the public school system.

Unfortunately he is beyond the point that he could live with us. My grandfather suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and he has never taken care of himself to slow the progression of the disease. So he needs 24/7 medical attention we cannot provide in our home.

Any thoughts on the muffs problem.

I don't know anything about behind the head muffs, but I would think that ear plugs would be the most comfortable if he could use them.

The plugs also go to about 34Db, whereas most muffs don't seem to go above 26-30Db.

I slept with plugs all the time in my old apartment. Worked fine.

I don'tknow about your grandfather, but I don't think I could ever learn to sleep with ear protectors. Of necessity they apply a lot of pressure to the head in order to seal, and they give me a headache and a sweaty head after a few minutes. If he turns over on his side they would get in the way. Ear plugs of some kind might work.
