Bane's Blog claims Sig 556's are on the way.

Here's an excerpt:

"according to one of my little Santa's helpers, start rolling off the assembly lines in New Hamster and off to dealers this week. Since this particular Santa's helper is also the CEO of SIGARMS, I'm calling this information 100%."

Here's the link.

I am just asking this in all curiousity.

What, specifically, about Sig 556's are supposed to be superior to AR platform rifles.

And, aren't these "domestic" Sig 556's basically stil going to be AR platform rifles in some basic ways?

Just reporting what I saw, as I know some folks are very interested.

The 556 is the 55X series (with gas piston operating system) but with the option of AR stock or 55X style folders, and which uses AR magazines. So you get the perceived higher reliability of the Sig (AK derived) system, along with the use of readily available magazines.

The piston-operated system of the SIG could be considered superior to the direct gas-impingement system on the AR in some aspects, but perhaps not as good in others. In most civilian sport-shooting conditions, the AR works extremely well. It is an extremely accurate platform as well as an extremely reliable one in most conditions encountered in North America. I am pleased with mine and would not part with it.

But I can see where the platform might cause problems in harsh conditions such as sand storms. The guts of the gun get pretty danged dirty and such conditions would require cleaning the gun thoroughly on a daily basis, which could be a real pain under combat conditions. I could see wanting a piston-operated system in such harsh circumstances.

Other than the furniture, which is pretty superficial, and the fact the 556 takes AR mags, which is a real plus if you ask me, I don't see a lot of similarities between the 556 and the AR.

Think of it this way. The Sig 550 series guns are the nicest Kalashnikov based rifles there has ever been. Not that the Swiss would admit to it of course. :)

Seriously, pull the bolt carrier and bolt out of a 55X gun. It isn't really an AK, but you can see the influence.

Plus the original 550 guns are reknowned for their accuracy.

Personally I'm looking forward to getting one.

Looking at the pictures, it really, really looks like a slightly-tweaked AR lower (even takes AR mags, as has been pointed out) and just has the AK-style gas system.

Hey, didn't the Daewoo do the same thing several years ago just before the first AWB? Took AR mags, but had AK-style gas system?

Sounds interesting. A little.

But for $1200, I think I'll just stick with my Bushmaster AR for now.

Thanks for the info. Just curious as I had heard all sorts of buzz over this rifle.
