Anybody know anything about the qualilty, accuracy, reliability, and durability of these rifles? They are available for $398 at Academy stores here in San Antonio and, if the quality is good, should be worth it.

From what I have heard, they seem to be quite good. There is a good article on www.gunblast.com

I bought one probably a little over a month ago. I haven't put it through it's paces yet as I want to tear the thing down to clean it out well before I shoot it.

Problem is the disassembly instructions from Taurus state that one should wipe down the outside, pull the slide back, and spray out the internals. I'm not happy with that.

So, I looked up some disassembly instructions on the 'net. Step one is to remove the magazine tube. I couldn't get the darned thing off. The instructions said there was only one screw so maybe it's just a bit stiff the first time coming out. Step two was to remove the buttstock. Seems a bit involved.

I really hope they make one in .44 magnum.

I've heard some negative things about them on the cowboy action websites. FTE's, jamming etc... until they are broken in. The early ones were actually replaced by Taurus due to a problem that could not be fixed. And to make matters worse, it sounds like Taurus' customer repair service has really slowed down a lot. Maybe due to too many problems with the Lightning?
But remember, I read this on the internet!

If I were you I would hold off for now.

I know many cowboy shooters (including me) who have had problems and returned them for replacements. Taurus has a lifetime warranty but is overwhelmed by the returns.

Mine stovepiped and slam-fired and then locked closed. It's going back as soon as I have the confirmation to send it.

Many shooters report that the replacements do work much better.
