Looking for a low-cost security solution for up to about 12 long guns and a couple of handguns. For now it's more for keeping the kids safe, but I'd like at least to prevent smash & grabs. Budget right now is probably around $350. I'd also be interested in hearing about any DIY security containment. For the short term I just want to get them in something better - right now they're in an old steel locker. Not terribly worried about breakins as there are always neighbors around who are good about looking out for each other, and our Lab is pretty vigilant and capable of serious noise, but anything's better than what I've got now for a cabinet. Eventually we plan moving out of the city a bit farther, and with that I hope to upgrade to a nice safe, but until then I want to do the best I can for the money. Any recommendations? Thanks y'all.

check sentry safes at Walmart or somewhere like that. They are in that price range.

Woodman;
If you'd care to, go to www.corneredcat.com. That's Pax's site, she's a moderator here. There's an article I wrote over there entitled "Securing Firearms In The Home", that should give you a pretty good overview of what's available in what price range.

I looked up B17 online and only found a floor safe by Star, which would not hold long guns. Could you elaborate a bit more on the safe you were referring to, or recommend a particular brand or brands or specific models?
