Hardware stores sell solid lead solder, that can be melted into a slug.Hobby stores sell lead for stained glass projects. The local range has tons of lead just laying on the ground, well maybe some is buried in the berms.

If you're really intent on using lead I'll give you some, otherwise I would suggest just finding some cerrosafe. If you don't feel like waiting, maybe get some solder? If interested, send me a PM with a mailing address. You want it in any form or is just a flat chunk ok?

I've had good results using lead fishing weights. The egg shaped ones are available in different sizes and the hole in the middle seems to to help maintain dimension when the slug is compressed. The last ones I bought in a package of 10 or 12 from Wally World were about a buck.

For what caliber? a OO buck pellet works great for .30 caliber - it's plenty soft.

Carsonbm--The last time I had an urge to do this I took a blackpowder rifle ball (pure, soft lead) and hammered it into a tapered cylinder just a little larger than the diameter of the bore to be slugged. Worked like a charm.

Any BP shooter you know should have the necessary soft lead projectiles, and will probably let you have just one, for little or nothing.

You're better off to make a serrosafe casting. Lower temperature and does a much better job. You can get it at Brownells.com

Just buy some cast bullets in the calibre of the rifle. No need for anything special. Cerrosafe is used for making chamber casts.

Best method for exact measurments. Pour chamber, leade, and a 1/2 inch or so of the barrel. Directions with kit.

Buy a box of musket roundballs or get one of your buds to guve you one just over the caliber of you rifle. They are pretty soft.
