my roomate bought this springfield gi .45 because he just loved the one i bought a few months ago. he bought it, put 1500 rounds thru it w/ absolutley no malfunctions. then he decided to upgrade and dropped in a new wilson combat extractor, sear, and hammer. shoots really nice now, but every 3rd or 4th mag it has one of these backwards stove pipes (ALWAYS the last round in the mag). we tried different magazines and that didnt work. then i figured the extractor wasnt working right so we put back in the old one and same problem (maybe even more frequent now). we are going to put his old hammer/sear back in and see if that corrects the problem tomorrow but i figured i would consult all the experts on here first. i have never seen a malfunction like this, where the casing is flipped backwards. it is really really weird to me. anyway, thanks for any help you can give.

ps...that piece of brass is just a simulated malfunction. when i couldnt figure out the problem i put that there exactly the way it does when it malfunctions so i could show all of you. that dent in the brass at the top is from when it actually malfunctioned. also, sorry for whole in the picture, but i couldnt make my pictures upload w/ out making them smaller...guess i just took some out of the middle on that one...oops.

The extractor (apparently both of them) needs tension. The hammer and sear aren't causing this.

It's happening on the last round because there isn't a round on top of the mag to keep the ejecting round from slipping out from the extractor. With an empty follower, there is nothing to keep it up.

Do the shake test to see if the round falls free.

the brass aint going nowhere once it is jammed. it really gets railed in there w/ no chance of it coming out w/o the slide being racked. i can understand the lack of tension on the extractor, but the SA original never had a single problem for the first 1500 or so rounds. this is just seems weird to me. i should try interchanging yet another extractor and see if this problem persists.

It doesn't need to be replaced, it needs to be adjusted. :)

Like the man said its the extractor and it needs tuned. Look around the 1911 boards and you will find directions. Easy job . Use the good aftermarket one Springer aren't known to be the best. Most 1911 parts need adjusted or fitted no matter what ad may say. I question the hammer/sear job even a so called drop in needs to be checked to be sure its safe. Just my .05
