4" XD 45 Question

I caught the XD fever, thought I could resist. (hey at least it aint a Glock)
My question is there 2 differnt 4" models? I saw one that holds 10 rds and looks like it has a shorter grip, but also holds the extended grip 13 rounders. Or is it the same model? I didnt like the long grip for conceilability purposes, but if it were shortened.... then have a few 13 rounders for backup:rolleyes:

I have a 4" XD .45 (full grip before compact) and I don't like the compact myself. Don't see the point. If you want a small concealable gun that aint it.

I have a couple of XD .45's the 5 inch Tactical and the 4 inch Service model. The compact is a different model. I would go to your favorite gun shop that carries them and have a good look at it, see how it feels and how concealable it is. The compact model comes with a 13 round extended mag for those times you want 13 shot's available. I would go have a good look at it. They are very dependable and accurate gun's worth looking into.
The best to you and yours!

I agree with my friend and confederate compadre Walkalong~!
I just can't warm up too the idea of a Springfield Armory XD compact.
I have other "carry guns" that fills that need a lot better. But, I LUV
my 4" very early service model XD .45 ACP with its 13 round magazines.

Question: Do the Springfield XDs have polygonal rifling or do they have conventional rifling? Can lead reloads be safely shot in them?

Conventional rifling, so lead is OK.
Also, different strokes I guess, but the Compact model is perfect... for me!
It gives a full size (not oversized) grip for concealed carry with a 4" barrel (so better .45ACP ballistics than with smaller barrels), but you can still use the longer mag if you have more clothing to cover things up. And yes, that 1/2" less grip does make that much difference, for me.
Lots of folks prefer a full size, 3 finger grip, for CCW. If you want to carry something smaller, there is a lot to choose from. There have always been design (slide cycling) problems with sub-4" barreled .45 autos which some have managed to tame. Maybe SA will too. But for now, I'll take the Compact:D

I've got a XD45 Compact. I'd been looking at the Service models, but when the Compact came out I decided to snatch it up. I would have liked a 3" slide, but that wasn't a dealbreaker for me. IMO for IWB the hardest part of a gun to conceal is the grip, so even the 1" or so shorter grip on the Compact makes it more concealable. I can still get a full grip with the 10-round mag installed, so it's perfect for me. I've run the dirtiest, cheapest commercial ammo in it I can find, and it's run flawlessly. It's also a soft recoiling pistol. Highy recommend it for others.

Texfire, I was hoping for a 3" slide as well. Hopefully it will happen someday. I love my Tan/black XD45 Tactical nonetheless.

Just like the 9mm and .40 compact, the answer is yes. There are two models. One regular and one compact, both 4" and both .45 ACP. And according to the website:
Magazines: 1 Stainless Steel 10 rd. & 1 Stainless Steel 13 rd. w/ XD Gear X-Tension™, easy glide magazines
It comes with one of each. And like the 9mm and .40 my bet is the standard 13rnd mags will fit and function without the "XD Gear X-Tension" adapters although I found it is not recommended to use without them because of the danger of pushing the mag too far into the weapon and causing damage.

There are currently two models of XD45 in the 4" barrel. One is the service model and the other is the newly introduced "Compact" which has the grip shortened to take a 10 round mag but will also take a 13 round mag with an extension.

Sean,
Your dealer is obviously not a volume dealer for XDs. They are lots of them out right now, even here locally in Atlanta. The national Distributor, Davidson's has 86 in stock for delivery to dealers across the country. Go to this link and put in your zip to which dealer they ship to in your area. You might be able to swing a better deal at those shops. The going price is ~490-525.

I have a 5" full size Tactical, and a 4" "Compact".
I'll be selling the Tactical.
The "compact" is what the XD.45ACP should have been in the first place...

I traded my 4" Service for a 4" Compact as soon as I held one. I took it to the range last night and it ran flawlessly. I can cc it with the 10 rounder or it is a great belt holster gun with the 13 rounder and X-Tension.
This one may be the "ultimate" semi for me. YMMV.

I have an XD9 4" and Subcompact. I love them both.
Is the 45 Compact near the same handle height as the XD9 subcompact?
having both the fullsize XD9 and the Subcompact, I have been able to experiment greatly with concealability, and I will go on the record saying that the shorter grip of the SubCom GREATLY improves the carry ability. The barrel/slide length doesn't seem to matter for me, since I carry IWB. It's the SubCom grip that makes the difference, its just short enough to slip behind my belt and disappear both visially and comfort-wise.
So I am just curious. No one around Southern Utah seems to have one available. But, if the grip is even close to the SubCom, this will be my new 100% carry gun.

nevermind.
some quick photoshop comparisons and it DOES appear that the 4" 45 compact is the same height as the SubCom.

The XD45 Compact has a full 3-finger grip, which the subcompact XD models do not, unless you use finger extensions, etc.
IF SA ever makes a subcompact model of the XD45, I suspect it will have the shorter grip height of the XD9SC and XD40SC, and probably hold around 7+1 rnds.

hmm.
So is there any way to compare the 45 Compact grip height to the XD9 4" or the XD9 Subcom?
I know with the Subcom, its a 2 finger grip, my pinky wraps down underneath the bottom of the magazine (which i like). And the 4" full size is a full 3 finger grip.
Your picture, though, looks like its the same as the XD9 Full size?
I wish some of the place here in my town would actually try carrying a good selection :cuss:

Yes, the XD45 Compact is the same grip length as the XD9 Service model, sorry no pic side-by-side.

So is it right to assume the XD45 standard has a longer grip than a Service Model XD9?

Yes,
From the top of the slide to the bottom of the mag:
XD45 Compact is 4 7/8" high
XD45 Service/Tactical are 5 5/8" high

I guess I'm the lone loser here who has all three, The 5" Tactical, the 4" Service and the 4" Compact:eek: , not really sure  why but all shoot great and all will be used for different tasks...:)
BTY the Compact feels like a Glock 19 on steroids same size just beefier;)

I finally got the calipers out and measured my XD9-Tac, and varoadking is correct. I assume the grips on the XD9 Service and Tac are the same.
The XD9 Tac is a tad longer (3/8") in the grip than the XD45 Compact
Makes me like the Compact even more now:)
