THE DISTRICT
Off-Duty Officers Carjacked
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11622-2003Jan4.html

A vehicle driven by a male off-duty Montgomery County police officer with a female District officer as a passenger was carjacked by two men early yesterday, D.C. police said.

Sgt. Joe Gentile, a police spokesman, said two men in a blue Chevrolet Impala blocked the 600 block of Upshur Street NW at 1:40 a.m. and jumped out of their car with a shotgun. They forced the officers out of their vehicle, and the officers fled.

Police are withholding their identities because they are witnesses.

One assailant drove off with their vehicle, a white and gold Ford Excursion with Florida license plate IW714T. The D.C. officer's .38-caliber revolver and the Montgomery officer's badge and identification were in the car, Gentile said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call 202-727-9099 or Crime Solvers at 800-673-2777.

If only Sniper9 had been there. I guess he can't be everywhere.

Word of advice to anyone who ever is faced with a shotgun-wielding assailant.

Try to do what the nasty man says.

Gun, badge, and ID.

Definitely not a Good Thing.

This must have been a personally owned vehicle, I guess, otherwise I wanna know why the Mongomery County LEO's go about in vehicles with FLA plates.

Don't want to face a carjacker--especially with a shotgun. Just don't understand why gun, badge , not on person.

RE: license plates. I know here we have plates from all over. Unmarked units are not always Crown Vics. SUV's , Pickups, mini vans, Porche, Vettes...and not all newer models either. We do have a lease program for newer ones...and the conficated ones.
Beware the muscle car from out of state...

Perhaps they just came from a secure facility that doesn't allow weapons (jails, prison, etc) and had to secure the items in their car? Who knows

Even the Cops aren't safe in DC

And yet, my wife still doesn't understand why I dont want to go to DC and do a historic Walking Tour, like she did in her High School junior year...1969 :banghead:

A little off-topic here, but does anyone know how well shot/slugs penetrate winshields?

Slugs go thru like swiss cheese. If your talking the side windows, anything will go thru those.

I can see retreating in the face of greater firepower, but how did the badge, gun and ID get left behind? Was it in a jacket or purse that was not being worn/carried? I always thought that stuff was suppose to be on the officer.

What were the carjackers doing with a shotgun? Don't they know that is against the law to have a shotgun in DC? I don't understand. I think that they need to enact some more gun laws in DC. I think they should make it illegal to use a gun, especially an assault gun like that shotgun, in a carjacking. I think they should take that shotgun away from those people when they catch them. They should be sternly warned about it being illegal to carry an assault weapon like that. They should be warned that if they do it again, they will be rehabilitated and be forced to take a minimum wage job. I am just so upset.

Some how there is bitter irony there.
