Has anyone attempted to remove laser etching from a slide? This is my Walther P99 and I'm not sure of the metal makeup. I'm looking for a fool proof way...I don't want to screw it up.

The gold is paint, and can probably be removed with a little fingernail polish remover on a Q-Tip. The slide is steel. You can polish out the engraved letters, but then you'll have to have the slide reblued.

I would settle for getting rid of the gold paint. Simple, and you can't hurt anything.

Why do you want to get rid of it?

And yes agree with Fuff - you'd have to remove the metal down to a level below the bottom of the engraving to be rid of it and then you'd have to refinish the gun.

You'd also potentially change the geometry of the slide so it might look funny.

Somewhere, someone is asking how to make their slide lettering gold.

Well if that's the case they should go to a store that sells model supplies. Look in the paint department or section for gold (or silver) paint.

Apply the paint with a small brush and fill the engraved lettering. Wipe off the access with a small piece of paper towel dipped in fingernail polish remover.

What about filling the lettering in with black and seeing if you can live with the less obtrusive result?

the lazer-engraved lettering isn't painted, but you can fill it in with black paint. I did that with modest success with the S&W 1911 I had, and I didn't like the "capable of firing with magazine removed" warning on the frame. I wetted a q-tip with dark gray KG GunKote, filled in the lettering and wiped away the excess, and it did a good job of disguising it a bit. However, it was still clearly legible.

vanfunk,

You are correct. It is lazer engraved just like the serial number. I'm not going to sand or grind it away, just dull the lettering. I'll try some black paint. Never thought of that simple solution.
