Stupid *%^)(*&$^9 sign...

Spent the day at a bowling pin and steel plate shoot in Frederick, Maryland.

On the way back home, saw one of those overhead traffic advisory signs on I-270 Southbound a few miles from I-495.

"Terror Alert Elevated -- Report Suspicious Terrorist Activity" and the phone number...

So we should only call the number if we see a terrorist and he's acting suspiciously?

How about if we see a terrorist and he's not acting suspciously?

Idiots...

Hum...

I wonder if spending the day shooting might qualify as a suspicious activity?

Mike, I agree.

I saw this on the news. I'm asking myself "define suspicious activity". I wonder if the old gray haired man in the wheelchair at the grocery store was a terrorist...he was wearing a sweater, had a blanket on his lap...it is summer and humid down here.:scrutiny:

Maybe you and I missed the meeting, you know the one when they passed out uniforms...What colors do us good guys wear anyway:p

I have no problem with the concept of alert vigilance, 1973.

I do have a problem with the people who write the text for the signs...

Mike,
I picked up my son (coming home from Ft Benning on pass for is brother's High School Graduation) at the Louisville KY airport yesterday. Because of the high terror alert, I left the off duty gun at home (not legal in KY anyway, but legal in Indiana most of the drive) and dumped both my Emerson CQC-8 and Leatherman Supertool in the console when I parked. There was a big sign announcing the threat level outside the airport. But no additional security that I could see. No rent a cop searching the car before I drove into the parking garage. (they were doing that in St Louis last time I was at Lambert Field) and no metal detectors at the entrance. There was a long line to get into the secured area. But every five minutes tannounced on the
PA "The terror alert is high. If you see someone acting suspiciously or anyone abandoning baggage notify a police officer or dial extension 270"

Almost was surreal....

I think the anxiety level of the public gets elevated.

Case in point: as a brat we had Civil Defense drills, we had actual drills ( like fire drills) we had b/w movies, pamphlets, and the like to educate the public on WHAT the heck to be aware of, and HOW to respond.

Yellow signs of where to see cover, yellow bbls of food , water, etc. Yes the "concern" was present, but so was the education.

Give the public TV ads ,demonstrating the activities, suspicious acts, situational awareness and show them what to do.

We grew up with some common sense back then, granted many on this forum have SA and a plan...bunch of folks don't and won't until shown...the terror of anxieity gets them. IMO

I been watchin' the road here in front of my wife's house, lookin' for terroristas. Ain't seen nary. Shame. Could I find one, I'd put his sorry tail to work cuttin' azaleas, rakin' leaves and haulin' brush. Lord, I hate yardwork!

Do terrorists have civil rights? I'd like to buy me a couple, cheap.

Like I've said before, someone put sheepdip in the gene pool.

They do not educate themselves, pay attention, or have a plan.
Be it WOT, tornadoes, anything. Geez the worry warts at the grocery concerned about the SARS virus case we have here. Of course the lady walked off from her cart with money in purse in full view.

We do have 'Nick Alert', like Amber Alert, the signage is worded ok and the public (I think) have a prety good idea of what to do.

Art's got something there...Mom could some help with yardwork...

Were you in Kali, driving back and forth to a shooting range, and complaining about the stupid text on a Fwy message board, I might have to drop a dime on you.;)

‘course, exercising your second amendment rights and displaying a command of the English language makes anyone in this God forsaken toilet look suspicious. :( :scrutiny:

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

I guess that's why the three of us were coming back from Maryland with about a dozen handguns between us.

And a couple hundred rounds of ammo... :)

Anyone else notice the proliferation of snitch lines in the U.S.? I wonder how long before they have one for turning in people who are hiding in attics.

beat me to it jim. I was wondering if anyone else has a 1984 moment everytime one of these propaganda signs/announcements are issued.

Too bad they don't tell you how you're supposed to recognize a terrorist. Is it any one with a turban? Any one who seems angry? Any one who doesn't have an American flag sticker on their car? Even -- think about it -- any one who slips up and exposes a concealed weapon?

For years I griped to my father, a highway engineer, that the guys who design entrance/exit ramps on freeways must not have ever driven a car. There are often wiggles and kinks which preclude accelerating to freeway speed before merging, or decelerating after leaving the main traffic lane.

I believe the same logic applies to those who write the text for various warning signs; they've not given thought to what is said.

Example: "Watch for falling rock".

So: "Be alert!" "How will I know that my alertness has paid off?" "We don't know."

In the federal courthouse here they recently blew up a "suspicious package." It was the file of a bankruptcy attorney.

Hate to explain that one to the client. "Well, see, I went down the hall to the bathroom and then . . .":scrutiny:

Like everything else we dominate at, from manufacturing to sports, when we decide to induce mass insanity Americans don't mess around.

I can't remember, who are we at war with today? Euraisa or East Asia?

Oh yeah, definately be a lert.
We have a severe shotage of lerts currently.
We NEED more lerts!

What does a terrorist look like?
Maybe the middle eastern guy at the convenence store.
Maybe the ATF agent checking up on you.
Kinda depends on a lot of things.

More importantly, what does a lert look like. :p

Masdsachusetts turnpikes are notorious for having compound curves in the on/offramps. I don't know what the logic of this is -- perhaps to slow you from entering the turnpike at a great speed -- but it is a dangerous practice, especially for Califorbnians who have never faced such obstacles. All of CA's on/offramps are smooth single curves. You can make a very smooth U-turn through any CA cloverleaf and never take your foot off of the accelerator.

Reading of strange signs and activities, etc. I am reminded of a rather odd practice that occurred at Keesler AFB in Biloxi. We went to school in one of a pair of big square white windowless buildings. In fact the "raven" part of mty name comes from training in that building. ravin' came later.

Anyway. At times the USAF would have a nuclear attack drill and we would all run into our big white bomb shelter. At other times the USAF would have a fire drill and we would run OUT of the same building. That got me to wondering if a fire drill in a bomb shelter was an appropriate way to waste tme.

On another note, someone mentioned these "alerts" as a "1984 moment." Funny. That thought has passed through my mind a time or two.

May you live in interesting tmes.

jimpeel, when the Lord and I were a bunch younger, I had a job interview with Pratt/Whitney at Hartford. On the way to the plant, I saw all those divided and curving four lane highways, but with 35mph and 45mph speed limits. When I was told of how easily one could lose one's driver's license, I figured that part of the world was not for me. And, besides, there was snow on the ground in the merry month of May. Yuck. I passed on the job offer.

Is it okay to profile those lerts? Who do you call when the terrorists get the wrong address for a dope raid?

"Big Brother needs you to be his eyes and ears!"

Or, could it perhaps be something along the lines of...

"The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance"?
